This was definitely a challenging hike. This was also my first ever overnight camping trip...and I’m incredibly satisfied with the camping sites, the views and the feeling of accomplishment. The trail was a little muddy here and there as well as a little icy/snowy. I imagine that’s what to expect of Mt. Mitchell in November! It was a beautifully mild 37 degrees and sunny hiking out to Deep Gap. Had a little difficulty starting a fire due to wet wood, but did have one for a time. Woke to a little bit of freezing rain making noise on the tent and went thru a nice snowfall and windy conditions in a little cooler temps on the way back. A pretty evenly mixed amount of ups and downs, with a few rocky scrambles and some helpful ropes in one rocky spot. The “hard” rating is well deserved, but I’d definitely do it again.

The views from atop of Mt Craig were the best. I stayed an hour up there just soaking in all of the beautiful views and beautiful, sunny weather.

You can hike a nice, shorter section of this trail by turning around at the Mt.Craig overlook. Only 2 miles round trip with excellent views.

Best trail of my trip. It was an accidental find when I couldn't located my originally planned TH. So glad karma worked out. I rated it moderate, defiantly not to be taken lightly but very doable. Spectacular views, dense forest, lots to see. The best part was the swirl of the clouds in the forest. Now I know why they call them the Smokey Mountains. Super cool!
