If you like streams, wildflowers, lush forests, and a longer hike, this is about as good as it gets in the Smokies. In wet weather some of the creek crossings can be a little tricky and require wading. Creek crossings aside, this isn't the most pleasant trail to hike in the rain. The upper section is heavily overgrown with dog hobble. The wet foliage constantly brushing against hikers can be irritating.

Beautiful walk in the forest.

Walked about a mile down from Newfound Gap then back up. Absolutely beautiful trail. Gentle incline as it was a decent workout but nothing excessive. Went end of September and it was quite dry. No wildlife seen but saw leaf bugs and caterpillars. Would definitely go further when I am in better shape.

Beautiful trail. All down hill on the way through, uphill on the way back. Four stars just because of lack of wildlife but saw leaf bugs and caterpillars. Nice open areas. We only went in a mile.

Perfect weather - dry, cool, the streams were low enough to hop across. This is a LONG hike but mostly downhill (if you start from Newfound Gap Rd), and the last couple of miles are pretty much a broad gravel/sand road. Some dicey rocks around miles 6-7, right along the stream - they’d be tricky if the water were high. Lots of campsites along the way for breaks and rest stops.

Beautiful trail. But WEAR WATERPROOF BOOTS. VERY WET AND MUDDY. Very strenuous for “moderate”.

My brother and I did this on New Year’s Day 2015. It was cold, filled with several creek crossings and beautiful. We hiked from bottom to top and it made for an extremely long day hike. It is by far one of my favorite experiences in the mountains and it made for a hell of a way to ring in the new year.

Great hike. We did it from Newfoind Gap Rd down to Pole Creek. It is a 15 mile out/back hike but is moderate at best. The inclines on the way back are fairly gentle till you get to the point where the trail leaves the stream and heads to the road. I really enjoyed the hike.

Ran the out and back from Deep Creek Trailhead to Newfoundland Gap Road for a total of roughly 28.4 (Garmin). Lots of washout and blowdown along the creek in spots but not too bad. Snow up high. Great route

Hiked to camp 53. Quiet walk with some steep switchbacks near the trailhead. The camp was settled right on the creek.

This is one of my most favorite hikes in the smokies. The terrain is manageable if hailed from the top down. Through the whole trail from start to finish you will experience the vast wild flowers that the smokies are famous for. The trail was in excellent shape given the amount of rain it had a week before. Very few campers in the area.

this was my first time in the great smokies. the first 3 or so miles of this hike are pretty mellow, with beautiful river crossings and awesome scenery. as we got to the 4th mile, we ran into some pretty gnarly ridges, but it was nothing we couldn't handle. we camped at site 59 and hung out for two nights, beautiful site next to deep creek. overall, it was a nice and tranquil hike, but it was more intense that we thought it would be. I would rank this a moderate hike.
