The alternative road (as the main road is closed due to the weather) which would take you to the start of the trail is very narrow and steep. It was covered with snow/ice so after a couple of miles we rather decided to turn back and we’ve chosen another trail with a safer road to access.

Wonderful trail! This is one of my favorites by far. Love walking through the Rhodo’s, especially during the fog

So my wife and I were visiting Asheville and were recommended this trail. We love to hike and the weather was beautiful. We noticed that some people had written reviews for this trail just a few days before despite it really only being pen from April-November or somewhere in that range. We were unaware how high of elevation this trail was at. While it was much warmer and sunny in Asheville, Craggy is on top of a mountain. It had rained the previous day and Blue Ridge parkway had actually closed due to icy conditions. We unfortunately missed this detail the day of, but Google maps didn’t and rerouted us to another “back road” up a mountain road. We’re used to GPS taking you weird ways so we thought nothing of it. The first 20 minutes in our jeep up the mountain was perfectly fine. We eventually hit snow and it was very pretty. The road kept climbing and we started getting a little nervous with how high it was getting and with the amount of snow. The jeep hit a small patch of ice on the road and lost traction and unable to keep climbing. We had to slowly reverse back down to a spot where it was save to turn around until we noticed it was all ice under the snow. I spent the next 30 minutes breaking the ice under the tires with tools we had in the car to free the tires of the slippery road. With no cell service we began to think very carefully about our decisions to ensure safety. Thankfully about 4 more cars came up behind us having been rerouted the same way. Everyone pitched in to help us safely turn the jeep around to make our decent back down. Some people decided to park on the mountain just before the ice started and to walk the rest up the mountain to the trail head. I’m not sure how much more ice was ahead but we did not deem a 1.8 mile hike worth our safety as the temperature was dropping more throughout the day. On the way down we past quite a few people also headed up the same road and we stopped to communicate to as many as possible about what we had just gone through. The road the gps took us on was not marked “closed” and because the Blue Ridge parkway was, the gps naturally rerouted it this way. I think we would have been fine had it not rained the day before, but I’m glad we got down safely and thankful for the others that helped us break the ice to allow us to turn the car around. Just wanted to leave this review to any others who might be coming from out of town to just make sure it is safe and accessible to do this trail as it is winter and probably less accessible/not as safe to hike as in the spring/summer months.

I'd recommend parking at the other end of this out and back unless you want to add another mile. The road is closed for the season about a half mile before the marked trail head.

Rocky, which made it a little nugget of a challenge, but not bad. Fairly busy on a Sunday morning. Restrooms at either end of the trail were closed for the season.

I started from the same trail head as Hawksbill/Snowball after I did that hike. Very similar trail to that and a good way to add more miles to your day. Craggy Gardens picnic area parking and visitors center was closed due to Covid? (Blue ridge was also closed to that section due to rock/tree fall) so I had it all to myself!

We parked in the top lot and walked down. Good diversity of views and nature. My son and hiked back up to get the car and we drove to pick up the wife and younger siblings.

Heavily trafficked which is okay for me sometimes. I would rate as moderate. It was raining today but we took the chance anyway, couldn’t see anything unfortunately but the leaves were pretty. I want to come back when I can see the views

Easy to complete and great views from the meadow - continue on to a great lookout where there is parking as well.
