Peace within the city, exciting iron bridge, historic dam ruins The Company Mill Trail can be surprisingly tranquil for it proximity to the capitol city. Approximately 25 minutes into the hike Crabtree Creek appears, which is where the Company Mill site existed back in the early 1800's. Remnants of the old dam are visible on both sides. Crossing an iron bridge, you begin the trail's loop section. Heading right, the trail follows the creek before walking up a short series of terraced steps. The views at the top will be minimal during the summer months. Continuing on, crossing the bike and bridle trail, takes you to a kiosk with information on the destructive impact of the Southern Pine Beetle. A sharp left keeps you on the trail, along Sycamore Creek. This back half of the loop can be very muddy and slick after a good rain. A slight elevation gain via a pair of switchbacks leads across the bridle trail once more. The remainder of the trail is easy hiking with very slight ups and downs. Follow along the creek to the bridge.

Wow that was an amazing trail. Kicked my butt but well worth it. Will be placed on my trails to go to more often. One issue with the app, halfway through the trail it was not following the trail.

Great trail to hike! Preparing for the Appalachian trail - good hills to get in shape!!

This is a nice 6 mile hike. It’s an up-and-down trail through the woods and partly along Crabtree and Sycamore Creeks. It’s a well used trail, but well marked and close to the city of Raleigh. Great way to decompress after a day of work.

Fantastic hike! Lots of beautiful scenery! Definitely moderate with the hills - almost always up or down. Loved my morning there - I’ll be back again!

I throughly enjoyed this trail-I started at the Harrison ave entrance and went counter-clockwise around both Company Mill and Sycamore loops. The terrain on this combined loop is much more rocky and rooty than the bridle trails, but much more fun (and difficult) to navigate. You can definitely trail run this if you are very cautious where you’re stepping so you don’t roll your ankle, which forces you to run more slowly than normal. Overall, I loved the quiet and serene feel of these trails; a great escape from the busy triangle area.

Enjoyed this trail! Nicely cooled by all the tree coverage. We managed this in moderate comfort despite the 92 degree weather. Saw two medium-large sized, non-venomous snakes, so stay aware! Will be back!

We hiked this trail this morning. There were a lot of people but the trail was still well-maintained. I think it is a little bit longer than the sign says, but it seems that a lot of trails are that way, especially in Umstead Park. This trail is shorter and easier than the Sycamore Trail. We would definitely do it again.

Great trail and plenty of up and down for a workout. Lots of roots and rocks so good hiking shoes a must. Plenty of shade helps cool the trail down on a hot sunny day.

Recommended. It was challenging at times but we did it and felt good afterwards. This was our first moderate hike, a great family day!

First portion before the river is busy with people. After the bridge it gets super pretty and hilly- great for trail running. Half way through it gets super piney, pretty, but there’s nothing like the hardwoods in umstead. Coming back!

Good day to be on the trail, minimal people and lots of sunshine. It was brisk but that made the hike better!

Amazing trail, started after 10:00am on Saturday and was it packed. Ton of Girl Scout troops using the facilities, lots of couples hiking and groups of young people and their dogs walking. Overall great trail with a range of terrain, streams and beautiful quartz pieces along the way. Would highly recommend!

Decent length hike with a relatively fair amount of elevation for the Raleigh area. The only issue with this trail is how busy it gets. The path down to the actual loop is extremely heavily trafficked, especially on a weekend, with tons of children who are understandably not great at trail etiquette. Fortunately, most people just walk down to the start of the loop and then come back, so once you make your way onto the loop proper its much less trafficked. If you want to do the loop without the crowds, starting on the other side of Umstead and joining via the Sycamore trail is great.

Nice nature for the weekend. close to the city, nice water you can enjoy to refresh - but would not go again, not challenging and no special view

I started from the parking lot down toward the picnic area and tripped and fell right on top of my camera that was hanging on my neck. Seemed like I tripped my way all through the trail! Not sure if it was me or what, but that's never happened before. Beautiful scenery. Loved the rushing waters and bridge. My fitbit said exactly 6 miles from parking lot and back and I only stayed on the Company Trail. Maybe I went back for a photo here and there but basically walked it in 6 miles exactly. My alltrail app went out on me so I couldn't verify my completed hike. Looking forward to doing all the other trails in Umstead. It is VERY muddy/wet in places and some of the downhills are slick, even with hiking shoes. We've had a TON of rain, so to be expected, but be careful!

Beautiful day for it. Busy. Past few days' rain meant a little mud, but barely worth mentioning (and certainly to be expected). Great break in weather meant more people were out enjoying it. Parking lot maybe 70% full. Still nothing but nice folks out.

It was a fun meandering trail. Found a couple of places to do some bouldering.

Just finished the loop with my Boston Terrier and I can't say enough good things. Beautiful walk next to the water. Trail is very clearly marked and has limited elevation gains. Great trail for everyone.

Perfect day for a hike on Company Mill with the pup. Just the right amount of dogs, families and runners. Be aware of the roots that might be covered up by leaves along the path. Will be one of my main stays!
