Getting There

Peace within the city, exciting iron bridge, historic dam ruins The Company Mill Trail can be surprisingly tranquil for it proximity to the capitol city. Approximately 25 minutes into the hike Crabtree Creek appears, which is where the Company Mill site existed back in the early 1800's. Remnants of the old dam are visible on both sides. Crossing an iron bridge, you begin the trail's loop section. Heading right, the trail follows the creek before walking up a short series of terraced steps. The views at the top will be minimal during the summer months. Continuing on, crossing the bike and bridle trail, takes you to a kiosk with information on the destructive impact of the Southern Pine Beetle. A sharp left keeps you on the trail, along Sycamore Creek. This back half of the loop can be very muddy and slick after a good rain. A slight elevation gain via a pair of switchbacks leads across the bridle trail once more. The remainder of the trail is easy hiking with very slight ups and downs. Follow along the creek to the bridge.

Parking is via the North Harrison Avenue entrance off I-40. Large paved parking area, shelters, picnic tables, restrooms, water fountain, camping, boat rentals, cabins, visitor center. More info: http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/wium/facilities.php

Peaceful (except for planes) walk through woods along creeks and river. Some muddy patches but not too bad.

Pretty trail mostly along the water. If you prefer more downhill vs. uphill, I’d suggest going left after the iron bridge. That being said, I went right and found the inclines to be moderate. Well hiked and slightly soft after rain. Will visit again! Lots of runners! I went at noon on. Tuesday and encountered a total of maybe 10 people. I’m sure it’s packed on weekends. There are a few trails off the parking area.

Hiking

This was a very nice 8 Mile hike. 90% of this map I made is marked, the rest is a custom cut through so I could get a better view of the small lake. Very nice scenery. The trail was a little soft from recent rains, but not too muddy. there was a mix of root and rock but not overwhelming.
