Backpacking

My son and I completed this route clockwise as a one night backpacking trip. There are plenty of campsites spread out along this route. There were not a lot of people on the trail once you go beyond Cat Gap. The route is pretty easy to navigate with signs at intersections and painted blazes spread out sporadically on trees. I don't recall if there was a sign pointing you towards Long Branch Trail on the dirt road that you have to walk down for a while off of the Art Loeb Trail. This road kind of takes away from the hike but we didn't find it bothersome enough to affect the rating. The whole loop has a few challenges with some eroded areas, some trees down on the trail that have been there for a while because hikers have detoured trails around them, and mud in several places. Even with all of these minor challenges, we found that the trail would be deserving of a moderate ranking instead of hard and could easily be done in a day with a daypack or heavier gear. Don't expect any magnificent views even with the few waterfalls that are towards the beginning of the trail.

Trail is 15+ miles. A little muddy in places but easy to get around. Washed out pretty band on backside of long branch. Otherwise GREAT hike!

Made a modification of this route, splitting it in half with a nice camping spot in the middle. Nice to watch the mist fill the valley after sunset. Otherwise great, well maintained trails with fantastic views of John Rock and a couple falls.

The 1st part of the trail all the way to where Art Loeb connects with Catheys Creek Rd. From there its walking on gravel road for a long time.4 miles about and Then the Davidson Trail was bush whacking the entire time, we got off and walked the road.

The DRT portion of this loop (approx 4 miles) is just walking on the road. Please let me know if I’m missing something.

First to Review

This is a great easy trail for the family! So many camping spots along the way, so don’t just stop at the first one. We walked it backwards and did John’s point 4.5 Mile loop but if you have any questions just stop at the visitors centers, those guys are awesome.
