Buncombe Horse Trail is a 20.3 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Burnsville, North Carolina that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until October. Dogs and horses are also able to use this trail.
From Commissary Ridge it begins near a water source and is rather flat for the first section. There are a number of muddy seep areas where you might be ankle deep but is generally easy. After a while you start getting to the switchbacks and descending. This is definitely not a section for horses and continues most of the way to the trailhead. It is narrow with large, loose rocks for long sections. Strong ankles and good knees are needed for this trail.
