Bodie Island Light Station Nature Trail is a 0.4 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Nags Head, North Carolina that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. This trail is a wooden boardwalk behind the Bodie Lighthouse that feeds to a marsh overlook. You are likely to see various wildlife on your trip. Check the park website for current information: https://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/bils.htm When the lighthouse is open, you can climb the lighthouse to the top. There is a photo book at the Bodie Island Lighthouse that shows pictures of the views from the top of the lighthouse if you are unable to climb the stairs. Accessibility: There are at least 2 designated handicapped-accessible spaces in the parking lot at the visitors center on a paved surface. At least 2 of them are van-accessible with striped access aisles. The trail surface is all flat (0-1% grade), wooden boardwalk, and typically at least 6 feet wide.
Cold!! Not really a trail as it’s a boardwalk the entire way but great views of the Lighthouse
A nice and accommodating boardwalk behind the Bodie Lighthouse that feeds to a marsh overlook.
All boardwalk trail that goes right by the lighthouse and out to the edge of the marsh overlooking the water...with a platform at the end. A definite must stop if you're at Cape Hatteras.
Short little treasure trove. Awesome views of Bodie Lighthouse and inlet!
cute little trek to see the lighthouse and marshlands. not really a hike but it was easy for the kids.
This was an interesting walk along a boardwalk with a view of the marsh. Among the finds here were red winged blackbirds, snowy egrets in abundance including one 30 feet from the boardwalk, crabs and an American Bald eagle. Trail ends at an elevated platform on the waters edge with views of the marsh, water and the light house. I would not call this a hike, but was a good walk to observe nature.
This is a short out and back trail entirely on a boardwalk. It’s picturesque with the Bodie Island Lighthouse in the background. In fact, they were shooting a movie when we were there and we had to walk around the crew to get to the boardwalk. A Marsh Rabbit was munching grass along the boardwalk so close you could touch it. At the end of the boardwalk is an elevated platform that gives a wonderful view of the freshwater marsh and is excellent for birding. White Ibis, Great Egrets and Snowy Egrets were abundant, although the wind kept the bird count down. For a small fee you can climb the Bodie Island Lighthouse. It is a busy trail, especially during the summer but worth the stop.
