07/29/20 - Direct ridge section of the hike is great and very enjoyable. Foliage and ecology remind me of the PNW. The branch that forks off to the right in the final section of the hike is contained entirely within a wash out that meets with a horse trail. Last section is thick and wild though there is a small path you can follow. Watch out for ticks.

Black Mountain Crest Trail is fantastic, though rocky and steep. We completed this route down to the Horse Range Trail. The only issue was how overgrown the Spur trail was. It’s a handy connection to the Horse Range Trail though. I recommend the loop from Mt Mitchell to the Horse Range Trail and then south to where it hits Black Mountain Trail heading to the summit again. It was about 6 miles and took my wife and I about 4 hours.

Dog friendly but is difficult. Not too bad to the first real overlook but beyond very treacherous but extremely rewarding vistas.

BIG TOM SPUR Did Big Tom spur from Buncombe horse trail. Via Colbert Creek entry Temps were below freezing. Definitely a challenge a great little climb. I'll be back again, looking at different routes to tie in other sections of the park.

Awesome addition to the Mt. Mitchell trail. Views from Mt. Craig and Big Tom are great.

I started this trail from the bottom of the Big Tom Spur. It is a very steep climb to the Black Mountain Crest Trail. Very large rocks that you need large steps to climb. This section of the trail will definitely increase your heart rate. The Black Mountain Crest section is much easier and very scenic. Mount Craig is a great spot to stop for lunch and as you climb towards Mt. Mitchell, the terrain is beautiful. Overall a challenging trail with the spur, but you will definitely feel accomplished at the end.

Lots of bees! But luckily did not get stung. We went a little past Big Tom and turned around. Bring lots of water, poles would be helpful on this trek. Spent a lot of time taking in the scenery.

We lived this trail. Black Mountain Crest Trail was tough but every bit of it was worth it. After we reached the end of Big Tom we took a right and landed on Buncombe Horse Trail which was very muddy so make sure you have waterproof shoes for that. We then hit up Mount Mitchell trail and made our way back to the main parking lot. About 10 mile hike and the views were incredible. Very rocky and various types of terrain but we love that kind of hiking. Highly recommend this trail.

Hiked this Monday and it was in great shape. There are a lot of rocks to scramble over but worth it for the views. We turned back at Big Tom and logged 2.4 miles, I’ll be back to do this one again

Great until deciding to turn onto the Big Tom Gap Spur Trail. I’d recommend avoiding this part. Going back is many times harder.

Love this trail. It’s like stepping into an other-worldly movie set when you leave the picnic area at Mount Mitchell. I hiked out to Mount Craig and back. I’ve done it twice.

We parked at the top of Mt Mitchell and hiked this trail to the peak of Mt Craig. It starts out easy but quickly you’re climbing hand and foot over big rocks. Very cool hike and awesome views from Mt Craig.
