Big Glassy Trail to Little Glassy Mountain Trail Loop is a 3.4 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Flat Rock, North Carolina that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
A very family friendly hike. There were lots of kids out. The goat farm is cute. The hike to the summit might be a bit difficult for young children depending on their activity level. But there are shorter less inclined trails to do. Although, I saw two young girls who couldn't be more than 5 years old that did it. It was decently trafficked on the day I went (mid april) but it was absolutely gorgeous out so understandable. Pretty short and sweet and great views at the end.
A little rainy, but that’s hardly the trail’s fault. The House and Barn are closed due to COVID and the bathrooms are closed due to a pump outage but port-a-John’s are available.
Nice little walk in the woods with a pretty overlook to reward the climb. I recommend walking around the lake if you have already seen Carl Sandburg’s house.
Good short hike! There is some elevation so don’t underestimate the climb if you’re not a regular hiker or have small children. Definitely doable though and there are plenty of benches to rest on along the way.
Nice area with several little trails leading to Glassy Mountain overlook. For a beautiful Sunday it wasn’t too crowded!
This was a nice, easy to follow trail leading to the top of Glassy Mountain. The trail weaves through the woods and is surrounded by trees and streams. Most of the trail is wide enough to be used by a 4-wheeler or even a larger ATV. The trail is dog friendly. I especially enjoyed seeing the variety of mosses, none of which are native to my home state. I did this trail on a foggy day and cannot say much about the view at the overlook.
Trail was is great shape and not over crowded. My daughter enjoyed the Sandburg Property and goats!
Great well maintained trail. The mountaintop is overgrown, so the view is slightly obstructed
Pretty nice hike from the pond all the way to the top of the mountain while passing right by Carl Sandburg's Home. Know that this is a steady incline all the way the moment you cross the white foot bridge to the mountain (more than a 1.5 miles). Make sure you stop by the goat farm near his Home.
Nice walking trail, even beautiful in places. Some of the path is so clean and flat you could hike it in flip flops. Good distance and enough elevation gain (620 feet) to get a workout. Entire trail is in the shade. Note this park is surrounded by residential neighborhoods, but they are not visible from the trail. The best time to go is very early in the morning for peace and quiet. The big disappointment is that at the end of the trail, at the peak, there is no view! As well-maintained as the trail is, the NPS has neglected proper maintenance at the peak. They have allowed the trees and vegetation to grow up & block the view. Sad we don't get to enjoy this land the way Sandburg would have seen it. I wouldn't recommend traveling far to get to this trail, but it's an excellent amenity for local residents.
This is a great Community trail right in the heart of a quaint village. A good introduction to hiking with a little mix of gravel, natural earth, stairs, stone, rocks, etc. The only vista view might be once all the leaves are off the trees, otherwise you are looking at tree tops. This is full of hidden gems full of a variety of flora and fauna and a nice loop around a little lake at the lower end of the trail.
Enjoyed these along with Memminger for a longer outing. Trails are in good shape & nice views from the top since the leaves were pretty much gone. It's interesting to think about Carl Sandberg making these treks himself....make sure to check out the goat house!
