Getting There

This is probably the shortest hike with the greatest reward as you will hike a total of a one mile in, around and out. The views are absolutely stunning!!! After a short walk there are two different areas that you walk out onto a large rock face with views of Grandfather Mountain and surrounding areas. This is a best kept secret!

There is a small parking lot and more parking along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Located at Mile marker 305.2 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. This is located right near the intersection of Route 221 and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Great Foliage! Less people on the Viaduct trail on this crowded fall day. Had time for both Beacon Heights and Lin Cove!

Easy to moderate grade up all the way and down all the way back. Lots of rocks, so you have to pay attention. Fairly short trail, popular with families. Spectacular view at the top. Busy, but lots of room at overlook.

HikingGreat!Rocky

The trail was a perfect combination of nicely placed rocks, boulders, and wood to give it a “natural” feel. The trail head is not clearly labeled, just know it is directly across the street from the parking lot and immediately adjacent to the street. Heavily trafficked trail, bring a mask because very few people were wearing masks and/or social distancing. The trail width ranged from 2-4 feet but the outlook points had more space to distance. There are two different breathtaking views/lookout points from the end of the trail - make sure to see both! The paths to the viewpoints split at the bench with a quote from “Unknown” inscribed on it. Overall, highly recommend this trail because the views are worth it especially with the leaves changing colors! This trail also connects to The Mountain to Sea Trail that is much more secluded. The Mountain to Sea appears to be an out-and-back trail but we couldn’t find it listed on All Trails.

Beautiful, short trail for a spectacular sunrise. For the best view, when the trail forks at the bench, go left.

HikingGreat!

Absolutely amazing sunrise. Pet friendly, went with my 80 lbs weim and she did great. Lots of rock steps. Not a hard trail of you can handle stairs. On my way down there was a pregnant women coming up for a photo shoot so it’s not too hard of a trail. I went after a few days of rain and it wasn’t too muddy. Felt safe being up there alone in the dark before the sun came up. Trail was marked well until the top. At the top there is a bench with a fork in the trail. Go to the left for the best sunrise view. GPS brought me to the parking lot and the trail head is across the road. Definitely definitely a must see sunrise.

HikingGreat!MuddyRocky

First, as a beginner hiker I would say we found some sections challenging because the whole hike is up and pretty rocky. Not a lot of flat parts. My somewhat older mother (60s and a rusty hiker) found it particularly hard to balance in sections, so while it’s categorized as easy, it might not be the stroll you are looking for if your speed is “easy by way of bass lake.” That said the views were great and we enjoyed it a lot.

Great bang for the buck! A short hike with great views. Could be marked a bit better at one fork, but not a big problem. Recommended.

Super simple hike, but very popular! Try the early mornings for this during COVID season. Went on a July morning to catch sunrise and it was great. Also caught another older woman taking it in. Was nice to be there in silence together, both as solo hikers. Happy hiking, stay safe and distance!

Caught the sunrise today from Beacon Heights. The views are gorgeous with Linville Gorge and Grandfather Mtn. being the most notable for me. The parking lot fills up fast later in the day, so get there early and expect fellow hikers.
