Beautiful. Recommend taking The Summit trail to Max Patch and not Buckeye Ridge if you are just trying to reach the top. Otherwise you will add more than 1.2 miles. The sign is misleading. Great hike though.

Great hike. The direction I came from has you going approx 11 miles down a dirt:/gravel road (I passed the max patch summit along the way) before you reach a small parking area to pick up trail at Lemon Gap. The trail to Max Parch is gradually with beautiful wildflowers and a steam along the way. Many sections have a lot of roots. The AllTrails map has you crossing the summit then going down the south side to turn around and climb back up. No need unless you want to get in more mileage and a steeper climb back up. Otherwise you can stop at the summit, which is approx 5 miles from the start of the trail. The Max Patch summit is beautiful. 360 views. I can’t wait to hike it again.

March 1st. So my dog and I started this trail at max patch, and we attempted to go down the AT. However, the AT had 2 feet of snow! Unfortunately, I did not bring my crampons or snow shoes, so we were only able to enjoy the beautiful views of max patch, which in and of itself was worth the 2 hour 20 minute drive from Greenville, SC. Moral of the story: in the winter be prepared for the snow!

Great section of the AT. Trail is well marked throughout and Max Patch is worth the trek.

Did this trail as part of my high school senior project. It was my first backpacking trail and I absolutely loved it!

Completed this trail today. Amazing is the only way to describe this trip. The first 4 miles are through a breath taking laurel and fern filled forest. No major ups and downs. Often by or near water. This is a great summer time hike as any views robbed by the vegetation along the course is made up for by such lush green. Once out of the forest, you begin the ascent up to Max Patch. It is such a fantastic prize! 360 degree views on a bed of grass. What more could anyone wish? It is stunning.

Great overnight backpacking trip. Elevation gain not to difficult. Trail was clearly blazed, not too busy, plenty of places to stop for breaks, beautiful wild flowers and scenery. Climbed to Max Patch summit! Well worth it!

This is one of my favorite hikes I have ever done. My partner and I took our dog and he loved it too because there were plenty of streams for him to drink from. The Lemon Gap to Max Patch hike shown here is the distance reported, but if you want to actually hike the Max Patch summit, it is about 1.5 miles longer and 100% worth it. We camped at the top of Max Patch and were able to catch an amazing sunset and sunrise the next morning. The weather is about 10 degrees colder than reported at the summit, so be prepared for a little chill.

Well maintained. Definitely easy/moderate hike - length is a little misrepresented

One of the best hikes I have done. I want to do again in the fall. Most of the hike you are in the woods but they are beautiful. It's a gradual climb up and back down and the view from Max Patch cannot be beat. Amazing hike along the AT.

Awesome overnight backpacking trip. Moderate elevation gain. Enjoyable. Shelter has a privy and water near by. We stayed in a campsite just within the trees near the summit. Will do again.

Trail was amazing. Snow covered most of it, but only an inch or two and on the way out it was starting to melt. Might get icy with an overnight freeze. Gorgeous views along the way and at the top. Nice to not have Max Patch crowded I can only imagine in spring/summertime.

Amazing hike! We hiked in and camped in the wooded section just off the summit and hiked back out in the morning. I had read that camping was prohibited on the summit, but there were dozens of tents set up. Very popular spot!

Fairly easy trek to the top with some nice switchbacks. The scenic view to the top of the “bald” was the reward for me. Just beautiful.
