Whiteface Mountain from ASRC is a 7.2 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Wilmington, New York that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. The trail offers a number of activity options.
A beautiful hike to Whiteface summit from the Atmospheric Sciences Research Center (ASRC). The first leg of the hike up Marble mountain is a tough, steady uphill, with lots of elevation gain over a relatively short distance. Once past Lookout Mountain, the trail gets very muddy and wet, but still navigable. The very last leg, up to the summit of Whiteface Mountain and the observatory is a steep uphill rock scramble.
got to the trail head around 6am Sunday, plenty of parking, great hike but steep for the first two miles then its much more relaxing on your legs, but starts getting steep again just about one mile from the summit. whiteout conditions with very high winds. overall not the best hike but it was interesting to say the least.
Definitely a challenging hike up and down the mountain. We didn’t bring spikes however we would look to invest in a pair for the next trip. Overall the climb is way worth it for the views at the top!
The trailhead is not clearly marked at the ASRC, but we found it without a problem, thanks to AllTrails. Once we hit the trail, the first leg of the hike up Marble mountain was a tough, steady uphill, with lots of elevation gain over a relatively short distance. Once past Lookout Mountain, the trail became very muddy and wet, but still navigable. The very last leg, up to the summit of Whiteface Mountain and the observatory was a steep uphill rock scramble, which was pretty heavily trafficked. Overall, I’d say the rating as a “hard” hike is right on, it is very challenging but definitely doable if your are prepared and set a moderate pace. Layering and preparing for changing weather is a must at that elevation, you can go from a beautiful sunny day to a torrential downpour at the blink of an eye and the wind is brutal up top, so bring layers! Overall, an amazing hike with some pretty spectacular views, highly recommend.
Muddy in a lot of areas plus ice however the views are amazing!!!
Great trail! Challenging for sure especially the first ascent to Marble. Worth every second though. The descent down marble was murder on the knees though! Some mud on the way up and then it rained the whole way down so that didn’t help the mud any but it only added to the experience.
You will elevate...Alot! 3 inclines over the course of 3.6 miles up with not much leveling, & even a little scrambling just before the summit. Plan to work & mentally prepare yourself for this one. See photos of our 2 Pomeranians who made the trek as well.
Trail was a steady incline most of the way - only a few trees crossing the path.
Challenging hike. Sustained ascent seemingly the whole way. Surprised by the mud - just meant more careful footing. This made it more challenging with the kids (10,8,5,4). Opted not to pursue Esther as a result. But, ultimately, the family summited Whiteface. First high peak for the 4 and 5 year olds.
