Getting There

See the write up added to the track

It is a fairly large parking lot. I was there on a weekday, so I don't know if it fills on a weekend, but I doubt it. There are other parking lots in Cunningham park as well, near the tennis center. To access the Vanderbilt from there, you have to cross Union Turnpike and go north on 199th street a short ways to the Vanderbilt, where you will turn right into the park. This makes the hike longer.

David Tarlo davsong@aol.com

From the Grand Central Parkway take the Clearview Expressway North 1 exit to Union Turnpike, go right and then the first left onto Hollis Hills Terrace. The parking lot is about 1/4 mile up the road on your left. From the LIE, take the Clearview South 1 exit to Union Turnpike, then go left and then the first left onto Hollis Hills Terrace.

nice walk though still a lot of construction going on and blocked off half way through (jump over the fence down the ramp to complete the whole walk)

Great walk but watch out for bikers, they ride way too fast for conditions and don’t seem to care about walkers!

Mountain bikingGreat!

Barely got to do any of the trail kid started crying and had to turn back. A few downed trees but over all looks like great fun. Watch out for people who walk/jog/run in double file

Nice paved trail on the Vanderbilt. Must pay attention for the turnoff on the left into AlleyPond trail which was wooded. Alley Pond trail was nice, easily marked and easy for all levels. Easy end point.

Fun. Local. Clean trail. A couple of pitched (and mild) “hills”. Nice for and out and back run.

Running

Yes it’s all blacktop. But this decommissioned section of the original Vanderbilt Motor Parkway has descent hills with both steady gradient as well as duration. And this is Long Island, we cant be too picky round these parts when it comes to hills. A good, solid run or walk. No cars to worry about and has nice canopy of trees. A Homerun if you you live in Nassau or queens!

Hiking

Simple, straightforward, long, and straight pavement trail ideal for a mindless walk/jog/bike ride. Gives you some elevation and though seems easy, it is a pretty decent workout. Does feel a little longer than it is, probably due to it being long, straight, and out&back. I completed this trail about 5 times with my dog, and my dog had a tick the 5th time. FYI.
