Bash Bish trailhead was closed today (5/3/20) because of COVID-19, so I parked at the state park HQ. Added a little extra at the end to see “prospect hill”, nice view west. Trail was very muddy and washed out in sections because of recent rain and spring melt. Other than that, easy, wide trails. Wear waterproof boots!

4.19.20 I took Michaels advice and took the cedar trail up and the south Taconic trail down. I recommend following this too. There were spots were it was slippery because of wet leaves. If you are slow and careful in these spots you will be fine. There are spots where down trees on trails but just go around them. The parking lot is decent size but fills up. 4-5 cars were battling for our spot when we were leaving. And definitely go out to sunset rock for the views. It’s definitely worth it!

First time doing this trail even though it is close to home. Cedar Brook was a nice trail up with multiple crossings of the stream. Trees had come down so I did lose the trail for a little but if you stay with the stream you will be set. Views were worth the trek. Loop trail down on the taconic was easy and dry. Nice hike. No ticks, no snakes on this day. Lots of woodpeckers.

I did enjoy this loop! There were parts on the way up that were really muddy. I think wearing boots may have been better. There were also (I think) three spots where trees were down and you had to go around. The final stretch to sunset rock was a little rocky. The path down was beautiful, and I’ll definitely be back earlier in the day to really enjoy it.

Lovely 4.5 mile loop to sunset rock. Loved the waterfall views and crossing over the brook/ stream was able to be done without getting wet or muddy! Not too many people on trail despite a full parking lot. Challenging in places on the way up but a very easy way down. Awesome views along the way and at the top! Would definitely do it again. Perfect 2 hour Sunday activity :)

There are three aspects of the trail. We took Cedar Brook Trail up. This was beautiful, as we hiked 1+ miles up alongside a running brook that had numerous small cascades through moss-covered rocks. A little challenging, with seven brook crossings, a couple of climbs up rocks, and near-constant ascent. Next, we hiked about .7 miles up to Sunset Rock. This had a steep, but smooth, incline. Except, one short area going up wet rocks. The destination was spectacular. Absolute tranquility looking out across into the Catskills. Finished by heading out by backtracking down those .7 miles and then along South Taconic Trail. This was an even, steady descent 1.7 miles back to the bottom and was fairly monotonous. In total, with plenty of stops for snapshots and time relaxing at the summit, 3 hours. Surprised by the number of aggressive gnats and black flies, despite being chilly and early-season. Tip: Park at the lot for Bash Bish Falls. Walk 50 feet on the road you came in on (away from Bash Bish), cross the road and take the first trail for Cedar Brook. If you go up a man-made stair, you went too far. It is better going up this route and then coming down the South Taconic Trail. When you get to the picnic area, turn left onto the trail and it will be a 5-minute walk back to the parking lot.

Great hike! Park in the Bish Bash Trail lot and the trail head for the cedar brook trail (blue/white path) is across the road. The first part of the hike leads you along a stream and in spring is just lovely. Last 0.6 miles is medium/hard steep but the view is rewarding. It took us approx 2 hrs up and back. Will definitely do this hike again with plan to walk up to Bish Bash Falls for lunch afterwards.

This was a wonderful and challenging hike. We took the red/white trail up and back down in blue. The way up was a steady climb most of the way and towards the top you should definitely be careful of loose rocks. The blue trail winds along a creek which is really beautiful and lush. We will definitely do this one again.

We thought this was a really love 2.5-hour loop, following the water on the Cedar Brook trail and the getting a bit better view down on the South Taconic Trail. Simple, well-marked, lovely views... nice little hike!

On the tougher side of moderate which made it feel a lot longer. We had the crossover the stream back and forth multiple times and there were not clear/easy paths.

Beautiful and well kept trail offers alternating moderate inclines and easy rambling paths. Enough to get breathless, but not breathless the whole time. View at the top features expanse of Catskills, lovely. Not a single person on the trail today (very cold). Peaceful and satisfying in all seasons. Too far for our (lazy city) dogs but the easy walk to Bish Bash falls is not far away and just their speed.

Good hike, January 2. Only a slight amount of snow and ice on trail higher up -- did not need ice cleats on boots. River crossings were no problem. Took Cedar Brook trail both up and down.

We hiked the Cedar Brook / Sunset Rock trail on Columbus Day. Bash Bish parking lot jammed. Only a handful of people on this trail! We enjoyed criss crossing the brook and spying fish and frogs. View from Sunset Rock was crystal on a beautiful fall afternoon – saw all the way to the Catskills. Be careful of slipping on acorns on the way down. Parts of the trail are covered in them.

Beautiful trail. As others said go up cedar brook trial, I initially went up the south tatonic side and it was rather bland. Cedar trail is very pretty with a brook almost the whole way up. It was very buggy with harmless gnats. But this time of year to be expected. Good workout! Will do this trail again !

Bash bish falls are amazing. We wanted a longer hike so we connected the Bash Bish Trail from the Mass side, to the Sunset Rock Trail. Sunset Rock had great views. We took the blue trail along the creek, it meandered quite a bit and the trail map and GPS didn’t quite line up but it’s easy to follow. I give it three stars just because the vista from Sunset Rock wasn’t as good as some of the others in the area that I’ve previously rated at four and five stars.

Very nice trail! Well marked, nice about of shade. Took us maybe 2.5 hours both ways. It’s definitely a real hike so be ready for that, but not super hard.
