Sugarloaf via Wilkinson Trail is a 3 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Cold Spring, New York that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, nature trips, and snowshoeing and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
This is the shortest route to the marvelous views atop Sugarloaf Mountain. The climb is a steep trail, particularly the ascent of Sugarloaf itself. Users start at the western trailhead of the Wilkinson Trail (marked as yellow) and will continue going this trail for approximately 1.1 miles, at which point users will turn left at a sign for the viewpoints, the last of which you reach at 1.5 miles.
Summit to the top of Sugarloaf is closed for the season. There’s nothing stopping you from going up. The hike up to the closed sign is nice. You can take the Breakneck trail from there and keep hiking.
Trail was very dry, loose and rocky at points. I wish I’d worn hiking boots instead of sneakers. Don’t forget the bug spray!
Picked a very humid and hot day for this family day hike, which made it harder going on the section approaching Sugarloaf, some of which is unshaded. The trail well maintained, but is mostly larger loose rock in this section and steep. Views from the lookout are great, though there is little foliage for shade. Despite the parking areas and road being full of cars we passed relatively few people. Took about 3hr round trip with a teen and dog.
Great hike. Rock scrambles are not on exposed edges and there are plenty of opportunities for greaty scenery photos. No sign of the rockslide mentioned in other reports. I extended the walk to include the fire tower. Abundant birdlife and wildflowers.
As always Breakneck Ridge is a popular destination for obvious reasons. Today I explored beyond the normal hard loop and it was amazing. Definitely worth a try if you have more time. I always suggest to come here very early so you can enjoy the mountain in it’s more natural environment. 7am-8am is perfect. By the time you get to the bottom it will look like Woodstock arrived. I always suggest to please keep your belongings with you and respect the mountain. There are no garbage cans so bring down what you bring up. Enjoy the hike.
Trailhead on 9D. White Breakneck Trail up to the top and all the way to the Firetower on Beacon. Red Casino Trail to the old casino ruins and back. Yellow Wilkinson Memorial Trail back over Sugarloaf Mountain to the Trailhead on 9D.
