Description
Waypoints (5)

Rockefeller State Park Preserve charges a parking fee of $6/vehicle that is collected daily between April - October and on weekends and holidays between November - March. This trail leads to a "spooky" historic landmark in the Preserve. With trail names such as Witch's Spring and Gory Brook, this path encompasses legends and lore from Sleepy Hollow and Washington Irving's classic writings. Although Spook Rock itself appears quite ordinary, a quick review of its' history proves otherwise. There is also a witch's shelter which is ALWAYS rebuilt...many think its the passersby and hikers who reinforce it, but perhaps its a spirit or witch!!

Nice fall walk. Arrived at 8:30am Sat morning in November and there was almost no parking left! Dog owners keep dogs on-leash here (as signage requests).

Overall very pretty. There's not too much on this trail that distinguishes it from other similar parks, aside from the one witchy-looking tent and the first bridge. I advise coming early while there's still fog...really sells the mood.

This was a great, easy trail, perfect for kids. It’s mostly loose gravel, a lot of inter connected trails. Loved all of the stone bridges and landscape this offers.

Very wide gravel trails on a big piece of property, nice woodsy scenery. Many of them connect to each other so utilizing the map was pretty imperitive. Junctions are pretty well marked, saw a few black squirrels and a plethora of chipmunks

Easy trail with some nice focal points scattered on the path. Ideal for the family that can’t handle large elevations changes. Mostly a cleared, wide path. Nice after work stroll!

Did not read the history before hiking this, and I really regret it! I didn't notice a witch's shelter, either, but I wasn't looking for one. There is no signage around the rock either - they should totally install a little placard or sign! Continued from here around the Big Tree loop and didn't see another soul - which definitely made it spooky!

WARNING - went hiking there this morning and pulled 4 ticks off of my dog afterward. Otherwise, a lovely trail but take precautions against ticks.

First to Review

My 5-Star rating is for the wonderful legendry attached to this trail...and the eerie witch's shelter (see my trail description above and photos). Have a spooky dusk walk AFTER you read up on spook rock and witch's spring.
