The City of Beacon offers a Free Loop Bus that takes hikers from the Metro North Train Station to the South Beacon and Scofield Overlook via Casino Trail Head. The bus leaves the train station every 30 minutes from 6 am to 9 pm Monday through Saturday and takes 15 minutes to get to the trail head. To view the most up to date schedule, click here https://www.dutchessny.gov/Departments/Public-Transit/Docs/Public-Transit-Route-G.pdf. This route starts at the base of the mountain at Mount Beacon Park. After an initial climb using a metal staircase, you ascend moderately steeply onto the Casino Trail. This is mostly old washed out ski trails. The first stop is at the ruins of the casino (as well as the machinery which hauled the railroad up), from which there are great views to the west and northwest. You continue the ascent (generally much less steep now) until reaching the old route of the Breakneck Ridge Trail (blazed with various colors). Here you turn right to reach the Beacon fire tower with its incredible panoramic view, ranging from New York City to the south to the and Catskill Mountains to the north. You then retrace your steps to the Casino Trail at which point you turn right. Continue (over generally flat terrain) until the Casino Trail ends at an intersection with the Wilkinson Trail (yellow), onto which you turn left, aiming for Scofield Ridge. There are two separate outlook points which offer views of the NYC skyline.

Great hike overall! A little icy as to be expected but still passable. No one on the trail early but livened up on the way down around 1100. First time here and I’ll definitely be back. Enjoy!

Long but well worth it. A few scenic points and historic ruins. The hike is challenging so be ready for some scrambling and a tough ascent from the parking lot.

Beautiful. Lots of fallen leaves, slick trail. The casino trail was really crowded so we changed plans and took the loop train instead. Nice to get in extra miles without the crowds.

This has been one of our favorite Hudson Valley hikes. It’s definitely pretty tough over that long big a distance, but it was worth every step we put in. Will definitely do this again someday.

Would only recommend this hike if you’ve already been to this area and have done South Beacon Firetower, and are just looking for a slightly different route for a workout. There’s a few decent views but nothing you won’t get from doing the Mount Beacon Trail

Challenging climb to begin but lots of rewarding views once you’re up the top. From there on it’s lots of pristine upstate forest and a beautiful waterfall to finish!

A but steep at first which was a little scary but it not as steep throughout the trail. Such a nice hike because of the awesome views. Cool old buildings with graffiti and of course the fire tower! Go up if you’re not afraid of heights!
