We backpacked for 3 days and 2 nights following the 17 mile loop. Parts of the trail were old logging roads and easy, other parts were really steep spring runoffs and considerably difficult. The Shelving Rock Mt trail was relatively short and easy with a lot of switchbacks. The lake shore section of the trail was very simple and full of great views. Once you reach Black Mt point, the trail turns inland and goes up to 2+ miles and over 2000 ft towards Black Mt ponds. There are a series of ponds and lean-tos on top of the ridge and from here on the trail is moderate. We arrived on a Wednesday and didn't see a single person until we hiked out on Friday. We were fortunate with the weather and the cold nights were our only battle. Great way to spend a few days.
