Beautiful day, lovely views throughout this hike. Definitely on the harder side of moderate due to many mini scrambles along the route, icey conditions on the blue trail that takes you down and across up to the eastern ridge, and some hard to find and easy to miss blazes along the way. For sure a hike worth doing but have a map, and bring spikes for the blue trail if you are doing this one anytime this week.
Did this as a snow hike with spikes. The path along the Trestle Trail was well broken up until ~1.5 miles, after which we cut over to the Otterkill trail for a 5 mi loop total (we got turned around a few times adding to the mileage). Overall a good time in the snow, and especially beautiful before sunset
fresh snow definitely need Micro spikes awesome weather and no wind, initially little climbing and then almost flat trail if you take a blue trail afterwards then 1/2 miles you need to climb, overall beautiful trail lots of view points.
What an excellent trail, get through the initial elevation and it turns into easier terrain. Good views, lots of picnic spots. We followed the AT route and split off right on the way back taking the white+black square trail down to the railway line to avoid the steep descent and get some extra miles. Took 4.5h in total with 20 mins for lunch
There way plenty of parking available when I arrived at 10 am on MLK day morning. Pros: - Great views in all directions - The Moodna viaduct is cool (and there's another path by the parking lot that leads to it) - There's a stream with some nice waterfalls - Most of the trail was not icy - There is some challenging scrambling to get from the western ridge to the peak of the eastern ridge Cons: - The trail near the peak was quite icy - The western ridge had a few nice viewpoints but was otherwise boring and repetitive The main ascent at the beginning was strenuous yet straightforward, getting 75% of the uphill climb out of the way early. The western ridge is fairly flat, and then there was a challenging scramble to get to the peak
Great variety of field, RR crossing, old forest , water fall, Hudson valley views, stunted pine ridge line. 1.5 hours up. Highly recommend this hike
Insanely worth it. Some icy patches and extremely taxing on the knees during the descent.
Awesome trail, got lost a little. Icy at points on the ridge. Overall fun.
A beautiful view of the Hudson Valley. A lot up up and down, and since we’ve had a lot of rain lately and it’s in the upper 30s it’s a tiny bit on the wet and icy side. Wish I had started earlier so I could’ve done a bit more.
