Lovely spot very close to town, available by your favorite watercraft. Mostly kayaks and canoes on this lake though some fishermen and pontoon boats. We did some of the southern portion as a half-day paddle and it was beautiful. The NY State boat launch gives very easy (and free) access with bathroom facilities. We saw bald eagles and loons. There are lots of campsites (permit required, need to reserve in February for July and August) and picnic sites on the lake that are beautiful.

Camping, canoeing, hiking and fishing at its finest. Annual excursion that meets all my expectations consistently. Beautiful, serene and truly stunning vistas, scenery and relaxation. Sites accessible only by boat.

I love this spot. Tried to do the trip in the spring, but the meltwater floods prevented it. Fall was a better time. No crowds and temps are still good. Did a four-day three-night journey out of SOT kayaks. Launched from Upper Saranac Lake at Saranac Inn lanuch, camped on Buck Island, and portaged 1/2 mi to Middle Saranac Lake. From there we camped on Bartlett Island and paddled through the upper locks into Lower Saranac Lake. Camped on Fern Island and then paddled to our take out at Ampersand Bay. If you want, arrive a day earlier and camp at Fish Creek Ponds campground, run by the DEC. Reserve in season, get permit from ranger off-season.
