Poke-o-Moonshine: Observers Path is a 4.7 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Willsboro, New York that features a great forest setting and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is best used from March until November. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Alternative route to the peak of Pokamoonshine. This route is less steep, but longer. Trail passes by what appeared to be a Beaver pond, as well as the remains of the observers cabin near the junction with the other standard route. Trail then joins with the other route for a quarter mile hike to the peak, firetower, and views of Vermont and the Champlain valley.
Hiked on 1/3/21 for sunrise. not much of a sunrise, but this trail is gentle and has a lot of views along the way, ponds & the cliffs of poko. prefer it to the alternate trail up poko for the winter, perfect for snowshoeing right now :) took 2 hours round trip, 115 up 45 down. Recorded as 5.2 miles.
The fire tower is closed, but the view from the top is breathtaking. The northeast view of Lake Champlain is absolutely beautiful; definitely one of our favorites. We clocked this hike at about 4.7 miles. Be careful because there is a slippery section near the top where water is running down from a small marsh over the flat rocks. There is also some rock scrambles and 2 small section of mud. Nothing too bad. Do not let this deter you from climbing this mountain.
Beautiful fall hike. Weather was great and the trail was nice and gradual. The pond, beaver dam, was a good little respite. The views @ the summit are great even without climbing fire tower. The hatch on fire tower was closed. There were a few steep spots but nothing too difficult. As long as you watch your footing and beware of the loose rocks you will be fine. Took almost 3 hours round trip and that includes a 45 min break at top.
Not too difficult, some uphill sections were really steep though. It gets super dark once the sun sets too.
