NOTE: As of October 2019, the fire tower is closed but you may still go up the stairs to access the view. Pillsbury Mountain is one of the highest peaks in the southern Adirondacks at 3,597 feet in elevation! The views are only accessible on the fire tower. Note: some may need to park at Sled Harbor Clearing and walk an additional 1.5 miles to the trailhead.

spikes are a must but there were people without. perfectly frozen with crunchy cover.

Awesome hike to an even more awesome view! Some reviews say you can drive all the way to the trailhead but I recommend you don’t even try. There are huge chunks missing out of the road and my Jeep renegade got stuck. There is a large pull off on Military road, right at the turn to Pillsbury road. Took about 2 hours to ascend at an easy pace (in the snow) and 40 mins to descend

It was a pretty great hike. The trail is well marked. The view is amazing, but the tower is closed. You can go up the stairs though.

Great hike. Recommend a good waterproof boot, I followed a stream the majority of the way up.

I wouldn’t rate this a “hard” hike as AllTrails does, but it’s a solid moderate. The ADK Firetower Challenge book rates it as a 3 on a scale of 1-5. You may notice that reviewers have different lengths listed for this hike, the length depends whether your vehicle can drive up the rough single lane road to the trailhead. At some times of year, like winter and mud season, it’s not open to vehicles. If you can drive to the trailhead, your hike is right around 1.8 miles each way. If not, add 1.5 miles each way. My Gaia gps track listed the hike at 1.85 each way from trailhead to summit and back down, with 1,550 feet of elevation gain. So there are no easy parts, it’s uphill pretty much the whole way. The fire tower cab isn’t open, but you can get some decent views from the steps.

Steep, tough climb. Super muddy in early October. No bugs but tons of water. Very slippery and pretty precarious, especially with running shoes. Got up in 33 minutes, 4th overall for the Strava segment. My rear-wheel sedan almost didn’t even make it to the opening parking spot 1.3 miles west of the trailhead. Only saw one other person.

Definitely closer to 2.6mi one way, per Apple Watch. Steep climb the whole way. Would not bring a dog on this hike. It takes 6-7 miles on Jessup Rd just to get to trailhead. Views are only from the fire tower up top. Make sure you have hiking shoes to navigate this trail!

Trail is nice. It’s definitely one that’s straight up for 2 miles. The last mile is relatively easy. At the top the area and tower are little run down, but renovations are in order.

9/6/19 Started at 9am took 2 hours for myself to reach the fire tower. Almost entirely uphill climb lots of rocks to negotiate especially near the top. on top tower looks to be under maintenance but MAN! are the views worth the effort can see snowy mtn to the north as well as the high peaks past that in the distance.

Challenging for a short hike! Pillsbury mtn. trail is steep with an absolutely beautiful view. The safety fence on the fire tower was missing on certain spots, but it looks as if they are in the process of getting supplies up to fix it. I'd love to get back to do it again!

Short but challenging! Traction can be a little sketchy when there is mud.

I hiked this trail on 8/9/19, partly sunny, 67 degrees & breezy. Nice hike, well marked and heavily traveled. I saw 8 people on the trail. Only took me 65 minutes to get to the top. The cab to the tower was locked and there was little safety fencing as I climbed. And WOW was it windy at the top. Still, great views. With all of the lumber and steel at the base of the tower I wonder if a restoration is being planned. I love to hike!
