This is a quite short loop around a pond formed by damming a stream that runs through an area which was an iron mine (Canada Mine) during the 19th century. There is almost no altitude gain/loss, although be aware that the footing can sometimes be a bit tricky along the way. The pond is the home of beavers as well as ducks and geese. Be aware that the area adjacent to the parking area is a major picnicking area, so can get rather crowded in the summer. Note that there are quite a few extant mining features, particularly in the areas between the pond and Rte 301, as well as just south of the pond, but it can be quite dangerous to go exploring. Park in the parking lot on the east side of NY Route 301. Ascend the steps and turn right onto the Pelton Pond Loop Trail (yellow) at the stone picnic pavilion. You parallel the west side of the pond (with beaver lodges soon visible) until, at 0.3 miles, you turn left to cross the dam which forms the pond. You then turn left to parallel the east side of the pond. At 0.8 miles, turn left onto an old mining road, soon passing a stone building with restrooms, then make your way back to the shelter and down the steps to your starting point.

Perfect short hike on a long hot day. Some tricky footing on places but not too difficult. Was quiet just passing a few couples and groups on a COVID Wednesday afternoon. There are many picnic tables around.

Pretty wonderful - a perfect day for an easy but picturesque hike. You get great views all the way around the pond. Some parts of the trail are a bit rooty, but not difficult. We hiked at the start of summer but I imagine fall would be excellent too. Our 3-year-old did great - good distance and enough challenge, but that contributed to our slow time. You do see more leaves at that pace...

This is an ideal loop to get into hiking the great outdoors. (And it's nice even for experienced hikers who only have only a short time available.) Note that the loop trail has been re-routed in the last year, presumably to avoid the areas which had somewhat treacherous footing.

Nice area to walk around after a fresh coating of snow. Can’t imagine camping here though, spots are right on top of one another and you can hear the road.

Quick, simple hike with plenty of nature to be seen...beavers, fish, birds. The pond is very pretty, surrounded by several Mountain Laurels.

I don’t know if it was because it was one of the first actual spring feeling days or what but this was an amazing little/easy hike around the pond. When you first get there, it’s a little loud with the road and all the people there bbq’ing, fishing and “partying” at the picnic tables but once you get far enough away, it’s not as loud and is very peaceful and beautiful.
