Getting There

River rapids, wildlife, steep cliffs, dog and kid friendly, wilderness close to home. Peebles Island is a nature-lover's treasure. The Perimeter Trail winds through open meadows, a hardwood forest, along cliff tops, and past river rapids in it's two-mile loop. White-tail deer, beaver, skunks, hawks, owls and water fowl can be spotted, especially in the early morning hours. Numerous trails criss-cross the island and are preferable during the summer months when the park receives a high volume of visitors. Fishing with a permit is allowed, and picnic tables are available along the route. Though located within eye-shot of nearby towns, the rapids at the southeast shore drown out the sound of traffic, and three nearby uninhabited islands offer wilderness views to the west. Thus protected, Peebles Island offers nature walks that are both diverse and serene.

Peebles Island State Park & Resource Center, 518-237-8643

Follow Route 787 north into Cohoes. Go right onto Ontario Street, then left onto Delaware Avenue just before crossing the Hudson River. Peebles Island parking lot is at the end of Delaware Ave.

HikingGreat!

I grew up here but this is not the place I remember. The park is beautiful and well kept. The trails are easy to maneuver through. Lots of views of the falls and possible eagle sightings. Great for kids and families, fishing birdwatching. Be sure to take the bridge to Waterford to check out the Locks and canal. We got lucky and saw a barge going through.

We saw so much wild life today, even a red tailed hawk. It was gorgeous. Not too crowded. The water is low so we were able to walk out towards the water and listen to it. Super easy. Even for kids.

So the only thing that made this walk worth it was the deer on the fire trail. I swear I could have walked up to her, if I hadn’t had my dogs. It was blistering hot and I only found one spot I could let my pups take a dip. The area in general is not pretty.

Busy trail, recommend to arrive on the earlier side of the day if you want to avoid crowds or potential full parking lot. Cool views of the falls. Easy walk.

I run here about 5-6 times a week. Great trail, not technical but you'll have to watch out for the tree roots along the trail. See a lot of families around especially on weekends. Parking lot is usually full.

I'm very curious about the trails history and the story behind the old crashed car up there

Lovely walk. We also took snacks and made a little picnic on the side of the trail. Fairly trafficked so it might be best to find other alternatives.

Very nice walk, gravel trail, lots of other people. Had very steep cliffs so hold onto your young ones! Great views of the river and spotted a blue bird. Overall great family adventure. There’s some benches and a few picnic tables along the way so perfect for a picnic.

This trail is full of surprise views of the river and man-made waterfalls — and deer! I think we saw 10 deer throughout the hike, all within 100 feet of us.

Nice place for an easy hike. Currently crowed on the weekends in the mornings and over half the people there weren't wearing masks or staying socially distant. Would recommend going in the afternoon or during the week.

Dog friendly trail with great views. Took us a little under an hour to complete. Not too buggy and an ample amount of shade.

If you're afraid of heights, do NOT go on this hike. The trail gets very (safely) close to the edge of the 50' drop into the river. Makes for beautiful views though! Very populated when I went on May 16th, 2020. Don't take off leash dogs or children known to jump off things.

Wonderful trail for older children and adults! Some areas with very steep cliffs (no barriers). I would not feel comfortable with very small children.

This is always a nice walk around the island. There was quite a few people out since the day was a beautiful day. The trail really wasn’t muddy at all.
