Getting There

The preserve offers over 6 miles of hiking trails, three picnic areas, two educational kiosks, and a number of informational signs. It has as its central theme a tribute to the Mohican tribe, the native peoples who lived, hunted, and cultivated these lands. Walking the trails, visitors can learn what Native Americans used plants, bark, and roots for and they can read how the Mohicans lived and thrived. Other interpretive signs teach about the value of the estuary and wetlands. Park benches are placed strategically throughout the preserve so visitors can rest and perhaps hear or see several of the hundreds of animals that call the preserve home. In the winter, by entering the preserve through the north entrance just south of the City of Rensselaer, visitors can enjoy winter hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. In the summer, car-top boat owners can access the Hudson River by carrying their craft merely 500 feet from the parking lot off Staats Island Road to the first picnic area along the southern boundary of the preserve.

If you have a low riding car, you can BOTTOM OUT going over the tracks, be careful.

Take 9J South from 9/20 in Rensselaer for 4.2 Miles. Sign for location will be on the right; take a right. Travel 0.5 miles to parking on right just after Amtrak tracks.

Flat and damp but thankfully cool enough time of year to keep the bugs down. Nice Hudson River views in a few spots.

All was well and good until I decided to let my dogs get a drink. And we had to walk in the mud which got super slippery and mushy. Needless to say I’m a little muddy.

Easy, short hike on a warm day. Lots of canopy, not many bugs. Mostly level, clear, wide trails. Several chances to see the Hudson River. Not much wildlife. Very few people. Terribly bad trail markings. We hiked every possible trail, including going over portions more than once, and reached nearly 4.5 miles. Yet, there were a total of 5 markings throughout. Fortunately, it is near impossible to get lost in here, with the river on one side and train tracks on the other. But, intersections were guesses. A portion of the Blue Trail is grown over to the point the trail disappeared at the river's edge. Fortunately, we followed the shoreline, climbed over a few downed trees, contorted around another, and met up with the trail once more. One gripe, and it has nothing to do with the trail/preserve, is that. for much of the blue trail, closer to the north entrance, we heard constant gun shots very close by. Not sure if there is a shooting range or just a home owner enjoying their land. This is not a complain against the shooting, but that this constant noise took away from the tranquility of the day. Further, because of the lack of markings, for a while, we had wondered whether we had left the preserve and had crossed into private property, giving us a genuine concern of being hit by a stray bullet. Parking lot can fit 5-6 cars. There is no fee for this park.

Good hike. Multiple trails thatvare mostly wide & areas where vehicles have traveled. Mostly shaded & dappled sun areas. Cool breeze, nice sights of Hudson & beautiful woods.

Great easy trail! Beautiful views of the water. Not too muddy. There is one spot where a couple trees are down on the trail that had me a bit turned around trying to find the trail but other than that, great hike!

This is pretty much the same 2 mile loop as the other Papscanee preserve hike...just A different parking area and entrance trail. This parking area and entrance trail I would say is a little bit better. This is a great little 2 1/2 mile hike we enjoyed it.

Trail might be decent if it was better maintained. One part of the trail (by the river) appeared to be closed, overgrown to the point that it is no longer usable. There is one spot to view the river that is nice, with a picnic table even, but otherwise nothing too interesting. We did see a lot of tiny frogs. Very buggy and overall the trail is not well maintained, overgrown in places and there is a downed tree in the way as well. The dogs enjoyed it at least.

Flat Trail was overgrown and closed off on the shore portion of the loop seating at the shed. Buggy but bug spray worked. Picnic table at end of current trail.

Not a bad trail by any means, very flat, very easy. Trail at parts is starting to get overrun but still very easy to navigate. There was some trash down by the river front as others have pointed out. All in all, decent but nothing memorable about it.
