Trailhead and parking lot is at the AMR (Ausable Club) lot down by Rt. 73. It's a short .5 mile hike up to the trail register and you follow Lake Road for a few miles and take a left at the Gill Brook trail junction. This section is beautiful with great views of the Gill Brook and a few flumes. You follow this trail until you reach the junction for Colvin & Nippletop. Bear left to go to Nippletop. You reach Elk Pass, with a few small ponds, and follow the trail upward. This is probably the most difficult section, where you gain the most elevation over a very short distance. The trail does offer great views of the the highest peaks, from Skylight to the Wolfjaws, all in one view. The elevation gain from Elk Pass to the Nippletop summit is 1300' over 0.9 miles. After this steep section, you will reach a junction, left is to Dial and right is to the summit of Nippletop. Bear right for .2 miles to the summit.

Very demanding hike with incredible views. The hike was relatively easy hiking up to Elk Pass, and once ascending Nippletop after Elk Pass, the trail became pretty much vertical most of the way up with no switchbacks. Very snowy past Elk Pass with some pretty deep snow drifts. Spikes are highly recommended but they didn't help too much when the snow was sticking to them. Trail to Dial/Bear Den was easy.

Started with Bear Den and the shoulder of Noonmark. Then Dial , which is just a boulder at the summit but you get a view ! Then Nippletop- on a summer Saturday you will be shoulder to shoulder with other hikers on the summit. Remarkable hike. I didn’t have time, but if you do hit Indian Head on the way out and bring a collapsible fishing pole for the streams at the end of the trail. Just beautiful.

The one-star rating is only for the erroneous information that dogs are allowed on a leash. The prohibition on dogs is ABSOLUTE. Leashed is not an option and this prohibition has been enforced for over 130 years in this game preserve.
