Mohonk Loop Trail is a 20.6 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Gardiner, New York that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is accessible year-round.
Tried it in early spring. The water from the higher elevations iced over the trail and it was treacherous. Drove all that way from Long Island and couldn't manage the ascent because of the ice. We went down to the forest to the south of the lake - that was nice. The hotel has built various obstacle courses and rope climbs in the trees to keep the kids happy. It was a 3 star "ok".
Beautiful hike on arguably one of the nicest days of the summer. Bring plenty of water, some gels, a good map and a compass. AT&T service is spotty at best so don't rely solely on smartphone apps. Be sure to note your starting points since there are several parking areas. Some of the red trails are poorly marked making it easy to find yourself off trail. This park is HUGE so drop breadcrumbs and periodically reference your map. Don't let the presence of other hikers give you a false sense of security since many are out for a casual stroll and do not know the area. Enjoy!
All day hike with lots of different things to do. Bring food and drinks, you can always get food at the resort but it is a little expensive.
We spent eight hours exploring the grounds. Definitely do the labyrinth, which was a fun hike across bridges and up ladders. I was like a little kid running around. then head to the top either via carriage road or lemon squeeze. We went down the lemon which was a little scary going down the man made ladder. Plenty of ledges and rock scrambles everywhere. with little benches and gazebos to sit in. Amazing hike with lots to do. A must of you are in New Palz.
