Moderately challenging hike. The temperature peaked at around 50F ... exhilarating views of the valley! Air was good up there today. Didn’t see any animals or many people.
I love this trail! The first part is really the only challenging part, after that first semi-scramble you are rewarded with a pretty leisurely walk and great views. There is one other ascent to get to Millbrook mountain, but it is not terrible difficult. We kept going to Gertrude’s nose and it was absolutely worth it! After Millbrook Mountain you will make a quick descent and then another ascent, but again, nothing too challenging. We took the Coxing trail back and that’s a very easy way to return and it’s just a nice walk through some really pretty woods. It was about 10.5 miles including Gertrude’s nose and it took us just under 5 hours. We even saw a porcupine! No snakes and maybe a dozen or so other people encountered on the trails. Enjoy!
Beautiful views on the ridge with trees starting to change colors
Equally challenging and rewarding. Beautiful views almost the entire route if you stay on the actual trail and don’t use the carriage trail.
Did Millbrook Ridge, to Millbrook Mountain, to Coxing Trail/Trapps road in that order which others suggested to spare the knees and avoid going down Millbrook Ridge, which is steep at times. Views on MR are beautiful and lots of fun rock scrambles. Snakes around on Coxing so be aware. They seemed eager to get out of the way but were big! Coxing is mostly wooded with some sections of planks to avoid mud - quiet, peaceful, maybe boring for some. It ends at Trapps Road which is a gravel pathway.
Loved this trail. Guy at visitor center suggested it because overcliff was closed to hikers. We ended up cutting across at Bayard to Trapp and it was a good time, would love to come back and do the entire ridge another time
Did this hike from West Trapps and spotted a car at Lake Minnewaska parking so we wouldn’t have to trudge back on Coxing. Definitely preferable if you can do it. There are some steep areas on the way up to Millbrook Mountain but nothing too severe. Also lots of ridge and slab walking. Plus, tons of mountain laurel along the way. Gorgeous views down toward New Paltz and off toward the Skytop Tower at Mohonk. Great iconic Gunks hike.
