We did Macomb, South Dix, East Dix and we added on Hough. The trail is open (hunting season is over in this particular area) but due to covid, the gate is closed to the second parking lot, adding a total of 5 miles onto your trip. We did all 4 mountains in less than 13 hours. We did need spikes but no snowshoes yet.

Hiked 10/10/2020. Parked at the Upper Elk Lake overflow lot. The main lot is closed due to COVID-19 and adds 5 miles to your hike (2.5mi each way). Kind of a pain in the ass, but it’s something you’ll get over. The road is relatively flat and easy. You then get to the trailhead and off you go. The 3 ish miles before the Macomb slide are moderate. Steady incline but mostly manageable. Then the slide... this was treacherous. It was definitely a fun and unique experience, but still dangerous. I ended up missing the rainstorms, but the wind was very strong. This made for an uneasy ascent and descent. After the slide, its a moderate climb up to the summit. One small section of slick and steep scrambling. The summit is mostly wooded but offers a smaller lookout providing a sweet view of Elk Lake. There were thunderstorms and high winds looming; I took the risk and essentially sprinted over to South Dix. The winds were really starting to pick up. It was getting dangerous. But, South Dix had great look outs. I debated on hitting Grace peak, but the weather was getting bad. I turned back and went home. The Ascent down the Macomb slide was intense. Be sure to take your time and move slowly.

LOVED this hike. The Macomb slide is such a cool and unique ADK experience, the scramble up to South Dix was super fun, and Grace has really lovely views. We also added on Hough which was a great hike too. Note that there will be an extra 4 miles of road walking as the Elk Lake parking lot by the trailhead is closed for the season due to Covid. The Lillian Brook herd path down from the split with Hough is STEEP and would be gnarly if you took it after rain, or if you were going up it.

HikingGreat!

Good trail conditions. Macomb slide is pretty eroded from the trip I took 4 years ago. Follow the cairns up. Highly recommend Lillian brook extension to Lillian brook trail down. It’s a beautiful trail down and you don’t have to go back over Macomb. Plan for 5 extra miles round trip as the summer lot is still closed.

++ Be aware that the main trailhead is closed for the year so you have to park 2 miles away adding 4 miles of boring dirt road hiking to the hike. ++ We only made it up to the top of Macomb and I measured 13.42 miles total. This is a tough hike! The first 5 miles are pretty easy - up to the campground / lean-tos - and then it climbs hard through the woods. Then it opens into a massive rock slide (maybe 4000 ft of it). This rock slide is no joke!! It's steep and tough to navigate (up and down). After the rock slide there are a few more tough scrambles. The view from the top was OK but there were a ton of bugs so we couldn't even hang out for lunch. Bring lots of water because the slide is super hot in the open sun. We don't mind suffering so this hike was OK for us, but if you're not into embracing the suck I would leave this one for first or last of your 46 experience.

I hurt so bad. I could barely get up the slide. Thought I was about to die. Didn’t die, then had to climb further to get to the summit of Macomb. By then it was 3:40 and we were nervous it was gonna be to dark to finish all of them. So we finished south dix and tried to avoid the slide. Thought I was gonna die again. This added another 5 miles maybe and we didn’t get to grace. Not to mention we had to walk an extra 4 miles because the ass hat at the property line wouldn’t let us start at the head of the trail. All in all pretty good day.
