This trail is longer than the info says. The trail can go across the locks, and over the Erie Canal and then up the other side of the gorge and around. I think the trail I took was less than 2 miles, and pretty fun. A few-hundred feet gain and not a whole lot to see otherwise.

An interesting place. All water transfer is accomplished with only water power. ( they didn't have electricity in the first half of the 19th century.)

This hike is to view the old Erie Canal locks in the center of the City of Lockport. These locks, often called the flight of 5, allow the old Erie Canal to climb the Niagara Escarpment, a geological feature which extends into Canada and forms the spine of the Bruce Trail in that country. The tour of the locks is a steep paved decline along side the 5 locks which have been disused since the creation of the two much larger Barge Canal locks which parallel the older "flight of 5". The 5 locks serve as an overflow for the newer Barge Canal. This is a short hike but there is a lot to do in the area. For a longer hike just keep walking along the canal. Stop when you reach Albany a week or so later
