Great hike. The road leading to the parking lot was PACKED with cars, saw tickets being given out left and right for all the people that decided to go swimming in the water. The trailhead parking area was completely fine, however. No bugs at all, beautiful day to be outside. Only ran into about 4 other groups of people on the blue trail all afternoon. By the time we got back to the car it said we had logged 8.57 miles so I don’t know if AllTrails isn’t accurate or if it’s my watch that’s not accurate because that was certainly longer than 7.4 miles.

Easy trail, with some nice views of the Hudson Valley. The trail is mostly in the shade and could be reclassified as easy. The Kaaterskills falls were still closed on 6/13

Went on 5/25. Kaaterskill Falls is still closed. We mostly followed the BLUE Escarpment trail loop south to the South lake, and walked on paved road between Scutt Rd parking lot and the parking lot closest to the Catskill Mountain House Site. It was an awesome trail, with lots of amazing view points. Total distance is about 6.5 miles, took us less than 3.5hr to finish. I would rate the difficulty moderate - there are some big rocks you will have to climb up/down, but nothing too hard for average teenager or adult. Some parts of the trail tend to have many bugs/flies, I'd recommend bring bug spray. I also recommend get an area map by googling "nynjtc north south lake map". Better than the free printed one you can grab from the trailheads there.

Great trail, we skipped bastion falls. you can see it right from the road and we were beat since drove 4 hours to get here. Kaaterskill is closed but that didn’t stop us. We hung out at the falls for a while. When we were leaving we saw a park ranger so I think we got lucky with the timing. I’d say this Trail is moderate- good for an advanced beginner. Lots of rock scrambles

Did not make it the full way, trail is extremely icy right now. I should have brought crampons or better spikes. Views were still beautiful.

This hike was great! We parked in the area by Scutt Road which is a little different from this trail map but it ended up working out perfectly. We went around to the lakes first and then went to the Catskill Mountain house site which ended up having much better views than we anticipated. From there we went to Boulder Rock, inspiration point, Layman monument, Bastion Falls and we finished up at the top of the falls. The most challenging part for us was going back up from Bastion to the upper falls (especially since this was at the end of our hike) but honestly the views at the top made the extra work more than worth it. You could leave the bastion falls part out and experience amazing views.

so many ways you can do these trails and hit up all the scenic spots. no matter what your decide its a great easy hike. but every popular so if you don't like people don't give the trail a low rating because you decided to go during the tourist season.

Took some short cuts and skipped North Lake and Boulder Rock. Still plenty of amazing views even without those stops. Autumn colors were coming in but it was also very windy. I’d still recommend this hike any way!

Great hike! Highly recommended. Get yourself a real trail map. No mobile reception for All Trails for most of the hike. The All Trails/Google Maps directions take you to the South Lake parking lot. I’d start right there and take the East - West Route (e.g. starting with the lake on your right). You will be rewarded with the best views toward the end of your hike. There’s one view in particular not to far past Boulder Rock that you could easily pass. Don’t. It’s the best of all the great views you’ll see.

Absolutely beautiful trail. If you follow the marked trail guide it is about 8 miles. Took me and a friend about 6 hours but we took our time and rested frequently. Most of the trail is in the shade, very nice for the summer. This trail starts with an incredible view of 5 states from the Catskill Mountain House outlook after only 0.3 miles, and it just gets better from there. Features many pretty views of the valley, a secluded pond, a mysterious well (just off the North mountain loop), and the gorgeous Kaaterskill Falls at the end. Definitely recommend this hike, but be aware there are a few tough rock scrambles that would not be easy for kids or elderly adults.
