Amazing trail. I followed the blue trail fully and went off trail a bit to the old green trail which added a bit to the hike, but it was worth it! Beautiful sites, trails are well maintained.. If you plan on doing the Blue Trail definitely give yourself enough time. It took me 4-4.5 hours to do it. Also I highly recommended following the green backwards when you get to it to go to the manor house! You’ll definitely see why this is considered the Nature Conservancy’s premier East Coast Preserve. The house is GORGEOUS!!! Bigger then the educational center. I can only hope they move the Education center or allow the building to be rented to help fund further purchases.

We headed out with a good plan to hike the full trail which we thought totaled 9 miles. Having started on the red trail, then switching onto the yellow and then blue, we would simply take the blue in reverse. At some point out on the blue trail just past Bass Creek we made a right turn and just kept on what we thought was the correct trail. It was not. We probably added 3 or more miles to our day with a hike out past Majors Harbor and ended up out on the beach. Having turned back and getting on trail we completed our day thinking it could not have been more perfect. The Preserve is stunning. We watched an eagle snag lunch, Osprey soar across the harbors, hawks, Egrets, chipmunks, more birds than we could count in amazing colors, and yes, there are ticks. Just be prepared to spray heavy and check often. Our day finished at 13.8 miles. Is that still novice hiker mileage?? Get out to Mashomack and enjoy this beautiful spot- oh, and we saw not one other person all day!!! Amazing.

Nice easy trail. We just did the green trail today and will do the blue trail next time. Nature Conservancy does a nice job of keeping up the trail and the staff are informative.

Ive done the 9 mile loop a few times...it's closer to 10 depending on how you walk it. What stands out each time is the birding, passing deer, and the beach. The center of the park is always my favorite spot...swallows and blue birds can be seen flying / zig zaging in the air around these really nice fields. There are good water views. Watch for ticks as I do see them each visit during warmer months. Down the road is the Shelter Island Brewery which is a relaxing place to stop after hiking/walking for a few hours :)

Nice and relaxing trail. You can do up to 5 different trails with Blue bring the longest at 10 miles. We elected to stay on the green trail of up to 6 miles. Only disappointment? Didn't see much wildlife except for chipmunks and some birds. But very easy trail to walk

A great spot. Friendly staff, magnificent water views with some hills and wetland bridges. Please use caution for ticks in summer.
