A 4,000 foot Catskill peak and one of the Northeast 111 in an easy day hike up to a great fire tower lookout. This is the most difficult route up Hunter Mountain, but also the shortest climbing 2,000 feet in just 2 miles! The top of this mountain has a little cabin, picnic table and a great fire tower you can climb for unbelievable views in all directions and down to the ski trails lower on the mountain.

Challenging hike, gaining over 2000 ft in about 2 miles. Nothing technical but just a relentless incline all the way to the top. Took about 4.5 hours to complete with a decent break at the fire tower. Took the blue all the way up. Then took the yellow to the blue on the way down. Quite enjoyed the hike! Beautiful views from the fire tower. Definitely coming back!

Great hike. Challenging but fun. Did this with my 18 month old on my back. Worth it.

My first of the 5 Fire Tower Challenge. Perfect day and weather, except it was very windy at the top. View from the Fire Tower was spectacular. 8/29/19

Short but challenging. 2000 feet in 2 miles of vertical. Dont get lulled by the quarter mile carriage road at the trailhead...this trail is tough, especially above 3000 feet. But the views from the fire tower are worth the effort! hint: if you're spent by the point the yellow trail intersects ths blue (i was), take the yellow to the tower and the blue back down (a short loop with the tower in the middle). if not, more power to you!

Cool hike. John Robb lean to has amazing view not to miss.

We took this trail by mistake, and it was definitely a mistake!!! This was the hardest trail we've hiked so far. It's not well kept, extremely steep and extremely rocky. It was wet and muddy still from the fog (hiked up at 8am) so we decided to take a safer trail back down via Hunter Mtn trail to Devil's Path, to Rte 214 and walked down the road to parking area. It was extremely foggy when we got to the tower, which was rather disappointing because we couldn't see anything for a view from the tower.

The views from the fire tower are well worth the hard hike. Took us about 4 1/2 hours round trip with a few rests.

Unrelenting hike but the view from the fire tower is excellent

Definitely a knee-buster but the views are worth it from the fire tower! I would not recommend this trail without hiking POLES and I used mine for both the up and down. I’m moderately in-shape, definitely not an athlete and made it to the top although it wasn’t easy as others have described before. The trail is a continual incline/ascent with no break. Near the top, take the fork to the right and follow the yellow trail marker for an easier finish.

Awesome day hike trail. Got to the parking lot at around 1 and still had ample parking spaces. Pretty moderate hike, steady up, with an awesome view from the tower at the peak. I would recommend this trail to everyone looking for a nice quick hike, although it can be challenging it is worth it, and it took me and my dad about 3 hours with breaks.

Great trail to a Fire tower. Over 2k feet elevation gain is challenging but the arrival at the summit is a few be reward. Going down is tough on the knees and hips but not as hard overall as heading up.

A gradual ascend. Short and challenging. Once at the end there is a little cabin with picnic tables and a knowledgable volunteer. The top of the fire tower offers great views and is the highest point in the state. Nothing special overall. Just forest covered mountains and cloudy skies.

No one on the trail, probably because it was drizzly, but it was a great hike!

Hiked this today. Parked in the Becker Hollow lot and also took the trail to Colonel's Chair (which is the top of hunter mountain ski resort), total about 3100 ft. Parking lot was empty at 8:30AM and had 4 cars in it when we returned at 2:00PM. Only passed one family of 4 and a couple of 2 on the whole trip. Trail was clean and well marked. The Hunter Mountain Overlook does not have any good views due to trees but the fire tower is great. There are some very steep sections of the Becker Hollow trail and coming down is just as hard as going up. Lots of bugs but mostly they were not biting (just an annoyance)

This was the first mountain, fire tower & trail I ever climbed in the Catskills. what a way to start! This was definitely the most challenging I've done due to the consistent uphill climb. What a sence of accomplishment once I reached the top. Some black flies, a little bit of mud along the ridge. I was the first one on the trail for the day but 3rd to the fire tower. The parking lot was full when I left. I took my time on this one and enjoyed the scenery along the way(with a few rest breaks). Round trip about 4 hours. Definitely glad to check this off the list. It was a beautiful day!

Steep incline. Mostly canopied forest. Got soaked near the top. Okay hike.
