There is a nicer trail at Hoxie Gorge following the North Country Trail (NCT) and utilizing the same start point where the NCT splits off at the bridge near the beginning of the hike. This trail is added for some variety. It utilizes a fairly new portion of the NCT that gets close enough to the highway that road noise becomes rather intrusive. No views, but otherwise a pleasant walk with the noise aside. The turn-around point is a pond and a short bushwhack is required (less than 50 yards) to reach the road from the trail. After that it's a road walk for a few miles back to the NCT crossing of Hoxie Gorge Freetown Rd. Alternatively turn around at the pond for an out and back that skips both the bushwhacking and the road walk, but requires listening to twice as much highway noise.

An interesting loop hike if you're looking for something a little different in this neck of the woods, but the NCT hike starting at this trailhead and heading north at the split is much nicer.
