From the trailhead start a mellow hike through an attractive forest passing below Little Burn Mountain to your right. As the terrain begins to climb the footing remains very nice. Eventually you will swing hard north and follow closer to a stream on your left. The climbing begins to kick in as you approach the Haystack Mountain Trail on the left. From here you will cross a dam and begin a much more aggressive climb. The terrain steepens considerably and the footing becomes much more eroded. Views begin to appear as you climb higher and top out at an open rock ledge.

Great trail. Crampons an absolute must. Took us 4.5hrs total, heading to the summit through the shortest half of the loop (left, clockwise) and doubling back. Even our adult husky needed a little push up the icy rocky scramble! Only met one other hiker. The trail starts close to the highway and stays close to it for a while, so you hear the cars quite a bit, could be bothersome to some. Summit is super nice, quiet and eerie.

Snow was packed nicely, so we only needed spikes. The trail starts pretty easy, but just about the last mile, it get steep quick & it doesn’t stop.

Hiked this past Sunday. Temp in the 30s with a couple inch snow pack. Awesome.

Hard to know what % of this review is because of the trail or because we did this trail the day after a huge rain storm. But first I would call out the many many stream/river crossings. Second would call out the dam, there was no way to cross it without walking directly through the rushing water (maybe a bridge was out?) we turned around and attempted to go the long loop way up. Then hit another stream crossing we couldn’t get across without wadding in the water. Given the temperatures and slickness of the rest of the trail we turned around and called it a day. There was a nice water fall that we passed making the hike not completely a waste, but we do not recommend this trail anytime around a recent rain.

Really enjoyable trail! You get to cross over 2 creeks and there is a steep rock climb at the end before reaching the peak. If you continue back to 86 taking the loop then there is very muddy areas.

Great easy fall hike. Mostly flat until the last mile or so. Moderate rock scrambling at the top. Great views from the top

Bring high waterproof boots. There are quite a few streams to cross or stream beds to walk down. I am very short was challenged to get across a couple of these so I just charged across and got good and wet. The scramble to get to the summit is pretty steep and challenging but fun. The view is beautiful.

Great hike. The rock scramble at the top was hard, but not too far. The views were awesome! We started at 6 am and were done by 11:30 am.

Great trail! A good hike in with a lot of winding trails. The incline to the summit was relatively easy. Just a few rock slides to scale. Good views!

It was a great trail!!! Stay to the left ( which means there is some creek crossing involved) the fork to go up the steep part and then make the loop for an easier way down!!

Great view at the top. Even the flat parts are very rocky. The steep last 1/2 mile is pretty tough especially coming down. Suggest taking Jack Rabbit down and hitching a ride back to the trailhead

Really good trail and easy to follow. The little creek running along a portion of the trail was just beautiful. The view was one side of the mountain, and I wasn’t even sure when I finally got to the top, if that was it. Some scrambling up hills but really nice trip. Wish I’d had time to do the Mackenzie piece too. Not much mud and the trail was well kept.

Great trail. My first bike in four years. So sore, but good.
