This is a nice easy hike off of the Warren County bike trail that offers a great view at the top. The blue blaze trail rises gently at first, then continues at a steeper grade as it turns northward towards the cliffs where you can see north towards the Southern basin of Lake George and south towards Queensbury. Just before this area you will see posted signs that indicate you are close to private property - please respect the signs and stay on the non-posted area.

Great hike if you’re local. View was alright

Nice quick short hike but not a super great view.

Great family hike. Went with our kids 9, 11 and 13. Distance was perfect and difficulty was moderate due to incline. As others mentioned, finding initial entrance on the mountain was challenging. Highly recommended.

Nice trail to hike just watch out for the mud pits in the beginning. My dog ran through them off his leash and was covered (oh well). Great views but you have to work for it. It’s pretty tough if you are not ready for it. I went up there in early November and there was no one else there at all. I imagine it probably gets pretty busy in the warmer months.

See John Vaughn's detailed directions and review otherwise you may never find it! Without his directions I am not sure we would have found it at all because as many others have said, the trail head is horribly marked. The trail itself is marked well though.
The trail is rather steep at times but meanders through a beautiful hard wood forest. At the top, you can see great views of area mountains and Queensbury to the south. There is a small path that takes you to the north to see Lake George. This path is not well marked so you will need to explore around a bit to find it. There is a blue marker on a rock that points the way but you need to be right over this to see it.

First time hiking French today. Enjoyed it! If you want to add 3 miles one way, walk from lg village onto the biketrail. Beautiful scenery and nice warm up. After you pass magic forest keep going on the trail until you see yellow spray paint and a path up a bunch of rocks. It is well marked with blue markers once you get going towards the mountain. No sign in book, but short hike.

Trail is HORRIBLY MARKED at the beginning. Follow these directions. Park on Route 9 North bound side by the monument just south of the Teepee.GPS these coordinates (43.376612, -73.700520) Go down the hill, keep going straight towards the bottom down the goat path, follow that to the pole lines, cross the pole lines directly straight to the bike trail. At the bike trail turn left. Follow the bike trail until the graffiti on the right. There's a yellow arrow spray painted on the bike path. That's your trail. First 3/4 of the hike is fairly easy incline to level hiking with a little mud. The last 1/4 increases rapidly for a quick ascent. Moderate in the beginning to harder at the end. View wasn't anything to write home about, your view is the outlets and south. There are much better hikes.

Good views of surrounding area and decent of lower Lake George. Best to park at the Williams memorial as others have mentioned and head down to the bike path. Trail from memorial to bike path is overgrown as of 10-Apr-17. Trail is well marked once you are a 100 meters in or so and its a nice walk for about a half a mile. Incline up is steady once you hit it, not overly tough though. I would recommend this trail if you are looking for something shorter and closer to the capital region. Very little mud after the start of the trail so it would be good for early spring (when we hiked it). GPS to memorial parking 43.376612, -73.700520

Nice views up top. Sketchy access. I parked at The Col. Williams Historical Monument on Rt. 9 a half mile north or Rt. 149. Then follow the path down to the old road, then old railriad bed, then down to paved bick path. Turn lefy (north) and walk up past a small rocky bluff just right of the path. A yellow arrow spray painted on the aphalt then marks the trailhead. Follow blue blazes from there.

I would judge this as between easy and moderate. Views are decent, but there are much better views of the lake from other easy hikes like the Schumann Preserve or Cat and Thomas mountains.

Great trail!! Poorly marked trail head though. Rated as easy on this app but NOT easy!! When you get to the peak follow the rocks and you get a great view of the lake! Enjoy!!

Not an easy trail head to find if you are only looking for blue painted rocks. The trail head is marked with a yellow arrow right in the bike path pointing towards the blue painted rocks. Located between the picnic area and the rock ledge with the graffiti. If heading south it is just past the picnic area, just keep looking down as you walk to see the yellow arrow on the left side of the pathway. Not sure why DEC doesn't mark this as a trail but even AllTrails could have described it better. Anyhow, it took me longer to find the trail head than it did to get to the top but it's a nice climb. View includes the souther tip of Lake George and you can see West Mountain in the other direction. I agree about the noise but I use a headset for music so it didn't phase me much. Trail is very well marked once you are on it so that was nice after the frustration of finding it. Overall descent hike and might do again in the Fall. At least I have an idea where to find the trail head now.

Steep and quick. Good views from top. The trailhead is a pain to find but it is off the bike trail.

Trail was maintained and marked well but the views weren't great at the top. The trailhead is only marked with blue paint, easy to miss of you don't know what to look for.

This is a short hike, but a little steep 1/2 way up. Trails are clearly marked and the view at the top is nice! A good workout for the casual hiker. Great for my dogs!

Decent hike. Not a well maintained trail and no real views until you reach the top of the trail. Doesn't actually reach French Mountain's summit but does get close and has 180° views facing west. Due south you can see West Mountain and beyond. Due North, southern basin of Lake George and I-87 winding into the Adirondacks.

It was difficult to find the trail head. We parked at Lyn Aire Motel by the Warren County Bikeway and walked South for about 1 mile on the Bikeway. Shortly after the picnic area, you will find the trailhead with a blue marking in the left. Stay alert! Easy to miss! Nice shady steady climb to a open view at the top. About a 1hr hike from the motel to the top. Lost its 5th star to its proximity to the highway traffic noise you hear throughout the hike.
We took our two dogs, and it was a nice quick hike for some exercise.

I was impressed with how well marked the trail is! Nice, short hike...but a good workout.

We went snowshoeing on this trail and it was quite an experience! There was about 2 feet of virgin snow that we needed to break through by ourselves. Only do that if you are ready for a serious workout. The view was pretty decent on a day with good visibility.

Hard to find. I'm on vacation from South Carolina and trying to get exercise after the holidays. This was the perfect hike for that. I might have lost the trail and just went up what might have been a snowmobile trail for the county. Either way, made it to the top. It was ice and snow the whole way, but, I was the only one out on a peaceful, beautiful , cold day.

Accessed the trail from the bike path going north off 149. Walking in about a half mile, just past a rock face with painted flags you'll see the blue trail markers. Nice trail, steady uphill climb. A lot of road noise, you won't feel lost in the wilderness. A great workout. View at the top is alright; you get a great view of the roadway below and various mountains around you. Hiked this on 4th of July weekend and only saw 1 family who peaked after me. Takes about an hour one way.

This was a perfect short hike for a September afternoon. The hike through the woods was very moderate with only a little steepness at the end for such a great view into Lake George. Took us about 3 hours total including 30 minutes at the summit for lunch.
