This state forest has a great trail system featuring over 10 miles of the North Country Trail/Finger Lakes Trail as the main trail through the forest with several side trails that offer many loop hike opportunities of different lengths. This is the most visited state forest in Cortland County. James D. Kennedy Memorial State Forest was named in memory of the District Forester James D. Kennedy. The Dabes Diversion Trail, Kuzia Cut Off Trail, Virgil Mountain Trail, Spanish Loop Trail and the new Swedish Loop Trail are also located in the forest. These spur trails are part of the 900+ mile Finger Lakes Trail System. There are four miles of cross-country ski trails as well as the Foxfire Lean-to.

Great trail. Did this hike while there was about three inches of snow on the ground, and it wasn’t too terrible to walk in. My dog loved this walk, and it had some nice views.

My only negative comment was that there was no place to park. I ended up parking in front of a seasonal road sign, and let a note stating I was on a hike.

Pleasant forest trail with a few good views and just enough elevation change to keep it interesting.

This is a very popular route for trail runners as well as hikers. In July there is the forest frolic race on this Figure 8 Loop. About 160 Runners took part in this race in 2017.
