A great state park that offers a beach, pavilions, facilities, camping and multiple trails to choose from (short to longer). The park has a lot to offer for those who want to spend a day at the beach, take a small paddle or those who want to explore some trails. You can camp here as well as visit just for the day and enjoy the park. The park staff and the Ranger are always very helpful and welcoming.

The description of this trail is a bit misleading. We had never been to Cherry Plain so we had trouble finding the start of the trail. The Charcoal Trail starts in the far corner of the main parking lot- and has yellow markers. About a 1/2mile in there is a divide that is misleading- you want to stay to the right. Going to the left takes you about a 1/4 mile and the trail ends. The charcoal trail is very nicely marked once on the correct path. We also came upon the Canyon trail which is marked with blue. However to be clear- none of these loop around the lake. In fact you cross into DEC land and have to walk back a few miles on a very wide, nice dirt road. Its a very easy hike and beautiful in the woods. We didn’t run into any other people our entire 7 mile hike!

A little difficult to find the start of the trail in the woods but once on the trail it was nice and well marked. More than half of the trail is on gravel road but still a nice 7 mile loop!

Great 9.6 mile hike, not too difficult and not to easy. I can’t imagine what this area will look like in the summer and fall. We went 3.28.20 and it was still beautiful. The park has a lot to offer, many trails to choose from and onsite facilities.

Hiked a 7 mile loop at Cherry Plain State Park. What a beautiful trail, with a little of everything; water falls, streams, pine forest, old dirt roads, and a pond/lake. I really enjoyed the hike and will definitely go back! The trails were marked well but the intersections could of been more clearly marked.

Difficult to read the map and find the trail heads. Once on the blue trial we had no problem staying on. All trials makes it look like this is a big loop, however when we go there I couldn’t find a parameter loop. No other cars/people (although we did go early morning on a wet day off season).

Hiked in snow with my dogs yesterday. Trails are well marked, for wildlife we saw 2 snow monikers. Tracks mostly deer and we crossed a moose path with droppings. Did not see the moose. Beautiful area. Snow still about a foot deep on trails that have not been used. Still doable. Just had to tune ourselves to be able to get back to car before sundown. Loved it, adventurous!

Did this last month. Did all trails but 1 and plan on going back to do that and go camping. Buildings being renovated. Was amazing. Well marked trails. Be prepared to spend the day. It was that good.

Things have improved since the other Tara wrote! After camping for a weekend, my family and I will be coming back. The firewood is kiln dried and in bags now - they even have a small camping store in case you forgot something (we did - matches!). The staff is excellent and the park itself is beautiful. We only wish that the bathrooms near the beach were a little newer.......beware!

We have visited the park many times from camping here, paddles on the lake, events at the pavilions, taking part in the NYS Sara-Cap Geocaching Challenge to day hikes. There are many trails to choose from - some are short, some are longer and some even take you by some historic structures.

I do not like this place....we went camping once when it stormed and and they sold us wet wood. The trails are bland...the lake is small...and you get a very uneasy feeling there....I give this place 1 star. Nothing exciting going on there.
