It’s a nice trail. Definitely not 12.6 miles though. The actual trail marked as the Canalway is maybe 4?? Then it’s linked to the Empire State Trail, Peebles Island Trails and eventually the Mohawk Hudson if you travel far enough through Cohoes to Troy. Overall, nice quiet.

I frequent this trail for my runs. Its really a nice area. Coming from the Waterford side the trail is mostly gravel for the first mile or so and nicely shaded. It never seems busy no matter when I go, it’s great!

Mountain bikingGreat!

This trail was so neat! It was scenic with the water on one side of us. We biked from halfmoon down to Waterford, got off the bikes and walked around lock2. There was only two or 3 minor hills in the middle of the trek. Other than that the trail was very flat. A few parts had loose gravel which could get tricky on a road bike or using a stroller. We will definitely be doing that trail again!!!!

Nice, flat trail. We stopped at the lock in Waterford and watched a boat go through. Really helpful guy operating the lock; I even got to close it after the boat went through.

Wish it was better taken care of. Not too bad. Was able to take my running stroller with the baby in tow. It was nice that the lock was stroller (ADA) accessible!

Trail ends about 5.5 miles in, there is construction beyond that and you can’t go on

Excellent ride. Trail is in perfect condition...except for the very end. Completely washed out with no options to go around. Will try again in a month.

really nice trail, but LOADED with ticks, each time I walked it, I pulled at minimum 6 ticks off myself and my dog.

Road biking

We rode hybrid bikes from Waterford to Upper Newtown Rd in Halfmoon and the trail varied greatly along the way. Paved, dirt, gravel, stone dust all in part. The area around Momentive easy to follow, gravel on top of the landfill road but paved on the slopes up and down making it safer. We rode about half a mile north in the grass north of Upper Newtown to steel plates over a broken bridge that was a bit scary, and so overgrown just after that that we headed back. Really enjoyed our day, give it a try!

The locked gate is a real pain in the ass.

This could be a five star rating, except for the strange area behind the plastics factory in Waterford where there’s a locked gate. We couldn’t figure out how to continue on the trail. Later, after riding miles around on roads, we approached the gate from the other side and saw an obscure and muddy path through some bushes. This lead back to the trail head at Lock 2. Very pretty in summer. Flowers, views, turtles, frogs, waterfowl. Bring sunblock. A large part of the trail is fully exposed to the sun. Also, it was probably too gravelly for a road bike, but it was okay.

First to Review

This Champlain Canalway Trail is a work in progress. As of December 2016, it is finished from the Erie Canal lock 2 (E2) to a landfill site behind Momentive (formerly GE Plastics). Going north from Schoolhouse Road, it continues up to Upper Newtown Road. From there to Whitehall, NY, there are sections that are competed and others that are being planned and built.
