Catamount is a smaller prominence in the Adirondack High Peaks region, but is considered by many to be one of the classic shorter hikes in the area. It is often overlooked because of it's smaller stature, which is a huge mistake. This mostly bare mountains offer one of the few sustained "Alpine type The last .8 miles is mostly steep over bare rock with many scrambles and three point hiking challenges. because of it's relative isolation, the views from the summit are first rate. One of the best views of Ester and Whiteface mountain in the entire area.

Very very poorly marked trail, sadly this would have been a great hike if there were more trail markers, even some surveyors tape on trees would do the trick. And then some spray paint on the rocks to give you some guidance. We wasted way to much time on false turns, and dead ends. We met many people in the same predicament. To bad because it is a very scenic hike with some interesting rock scrambles.

Great trail. Starts in a magical walk through the forest, and then the elevation begins and almost immediately you are out on exposed faces. Nice scramble to the top which distracts you from the fast elevation increase. Make sure not to take the wrong turn, many alternative paths are made for easier scramble/steps but also lead to dead ends sometimes. Hike could use a few more trail markers. Great hike for your last day in ADK heading back home (for us MTL, Canada).

Great hike with 2 summits and beautiful views. It starts off easy but gets trickier and trickier as you progress. The narrow rocky pass is fun both ways. There are a few “off the trail” alternative routes, makes it interesting.

First experience in the Adirondack, interesting hike and a little challenging if you are a bit rusty! Do not trust the quiet start, once past the fireplace it's another experience! But oh how beautiful once arrived at the top. The descent gets into the legs but nothing better than a burger and a good beer at Livingood's in the small town of Peru

Great hike. This short hike had everything to offer, from a soft pine laden trail in the beginning to an exposed rocky scramble at the top.

Love this one! Technical and somewhat challenging but not long duration. False summit has great views too.

A very flat trail at the beginning and then after the brook it is up and up! We got to the Chimney but the wind that day was just too much so we turned around just 0.7 from the summit. We will be back. What a great hike with some great views even though we weren't all the way at the top.

I have to give this a five star rating as the summit is quite rewarding. That said, trail designation at the top leaves a lot to be desired. Let's just say that coming down I never saw the chimney. After a couple of committed steps (i.e., mistakes heading to the right), I found myself at a steep drop with no other option than to slide down. Pretty lucky to be alive, actually, thanks to a couple of trees to slow and absorb my impact of what essentially was a free fall. It was then that I heard voices to my left and bushwhacked over to the trail. I wouldn't do this one alone - more eyes and better decision making for sure. Separately, this is likely a good time of year for this hike - a bit cooler, less buggy, and presumably less wet. In a couple of weeks the foliage must be spectacular though and likely worth the wait if you have that luxury. Cheers!

This was an easygoing hike until you reach the chimney and this is where all the climbing/scrambling begins. The views are breathtaking and once you get to the false summit you may think that you’re there, but there’s still another .3 miles and 300’+ of elevation gain to get to the actual summit. There were people there with their dogs and some of them turned around. There were some people that were just happy to be on the false summit. My hiking partner didn’t have any gas left in the tank to go to the actual summit, so we just settled for the false summit and the views from there. Overall I will definitely go back to hike this to the actual summit.

*** In past week, NYS DEC has added many markers to trail to improve navigation, especially after the chimney. (Hiked with a friend who did the hike a week prior who noted many new markers). Great hike! Took a leisurely 2 hour hike to the summit. Path starts off easy then a moderate "slog" to a false summit, then some scrambling up rock to the summit. Follow yellow markers, cairns, and all the scratches from hiking poles in the rock to the summit. Great views of white face and other nearby mountains and lakes. A word of warning, the chimney makes hiking with a dog very hard as you have to climb about 25' up using rock foot and hand holds. That being said, it was a very safe hike in dry conditions. Great shorter, less traveled mountain if you aren't trying to do high peeks.

Moderate path to the chimney. From this point, it is climbing and very dangerous. Also badly indicated.

VERY POORLY MARKED: we went off trail many times. This all trails map is also not accurate. AT THE TOP OF THE CHIMNEY CLIMB, THE TRAIL IS DIRECTLY ON YOUR LEFT. For the protection of the plant life and dirt, please do not go towards the big rock.
