Tips

The first mile of the hike is on a primarily wide trail with a slight grade. There is an intersection that leads to several other summits not too far in - be sure to maintain your trail markers. The descent through mile 2 becomes steeper and has rocky sections with a few easy stream crossings. The views slowly start to come during the last mile or so of the hike as the canopy recedes and the rocky scrambles begin. Some of the scrambles may require a hands on approach so care should be taken with the younger hikers. The view from the summit is well worth the hike. Tons of blueberries near the summit in early summer. Tend to go fast due to heavy foot traffic that same time of year.

Take Ridge Road (9L) to Pilot Knob Road (County Road 38). Drive on Pilot Knob Road for 3.4 miles and look for the trailhead on your right. Parking can get crowded - especially on the weekends.

Directions to trailhead: Take exit 20 off of I-87 and follow route 9 north to route 149 headed east. Follow 149 until you pass a golf course on your left (queensbury golf course). Take a left at the next road which is 9L. Follow 9L north towards the lake, taking a right hand turn onto Pilot Knob Road when the road splits. Follow this road for another 3 miles until you see a large DEC sign on the right side of the road marking the parking lot for the trailhead.

The first of my LG 12 and I LOVED it. The view was worth every second! I’m a very new hiker and I was able to finish this. The last stretch was a little steep but it’s short enough where you can just truck through it. My 20lb mini breed came with me and it was totally fine for her too. If we can do it you 100% can too.

HikingGreat!

Clearly marked trail with minimal mud. Lots of steep parts. I wish I brought an extra bag to pick up some of the trash on the trail. It was a little crowded but it was a beautiful Saturday so that's to be expected. Overall an awesome little hike and spectacular view! (Parking area has large craters that weren't kind to my small sedan.)

Ice is gone. trail is pretty dry already. waterfalls are flowing but the mud is minimal. Walk through it, not around it!

Amazing trail and conditions and views. So glad did this longer path from Pilot Knob rather than Hogtown although that’s a great hike too. Waterfalls views ledges and no snow nor ice and minimal mud.

The hike up the mountain mixes between parts of flat land and then uphills. It is also pretty rocky and there are a few creeks to step over. The walk there was really enjoyable and the view was TOTALLY worth it! Highly recommend this hike.

Was a beautiful day for this trail. Starts out quite flat, and you have to cross a couple of streams (sometimes not straightforward but certainly doable), and then gradually gets steep at points. Not as mushy compared to some of the other trails we went on, post rain. No snow/ice at all, was totally fine without microspikes. The last stretch is a bit steep and rocky but the views at the top were well worth it. Overall would highly recommend, and would do again on a nice sunny day!!!

HikingGreat!

Conditions today we're beautiful. The trail is very well marked, and very manageable, from a technical standpoint. there are a few section of shallow running water you have to cross, but none are too difficult. the last mile going up is tough, a great workout, however, the view when you get to the summit is beautiful. Loved this trail, Great workout, not too difficult to traverse, beautiful conditions.

Great trail, great day! We’ve usually found that when we see “need spikes” that it’s pretty optional for the trail. Nope, not this one. If you don’t have spikes or poles then there are many sections of this trail that are straight up dangerous. Several groups we saw on the trail had to turn back because of the conditions. Great view from the top though!

The hike was hard with the snow on the way up. Wasn't icy in most spots but spikes are still recommended.
