This is a route which, starting at the western terminus of the Breakneck Ridge Trail, takes you up the first 4 peaks thereof. This is the most popular part of the trail, so it is frequently quite crowded. There is considerable rock-scrambling involved, but the fairly constant views are awesome. The route (though not the trail) ends at a viewpoint at the 4th peak, after which you have to make your way (carefully) back down the way you came. [A safer alternative to this is to descend back to the intersection with the Undercliff Trail (yellow blazes), and descend via the combination of the Undercliff Trail, an unnamed green-blazed trail, and the Brook Trail (red blazes).]

Note that parking near the Breakneck Ridge trailhead on NY9D has been greatly reduced, as the MTA (presumably as a result of being blamed for the fire a couple of weeks ago) has blocked off essentially all parking on the west side of 9D.

Fun trail. Micro spikes likely are about as close to a must as they come. A slip would be costly. A couple decent views, nothing fantastic. Nice hike and fun scrambling. For the life of me I don’t know why you would do this as an in and out. I would suggest making this a loop hike.

This trail is not recommended by NY State Parks or the NYNJ Trail Conference. Hiking back down the Breakneck trail is dangerous. Please follow the routes laid out by the park at the bottom of the trail to avoid injury and interference with those trying to hike up the rock scrambles. I am the park manager.

Second time up breakneck for my wife and I brought my 16 son. He loved it as much as we did even the cold did not keep the hordes of hikers away.

On of my favorite, close to home hikes. Lots of climbing sections off the main trails.

Amazing hike with amazing views. The first hour was by far the best and most entertaining but this made for a fantastic way to spend our Saturday. Super challenging and not for the out of shape, but definitely doable even if you are not a seasoned hiker.

Favorite hike ever!!! Can do the short trail takes about 1.5h if you move fast and it is a tough hike that you work up a good sweat. Don’t miss it!!! Wear hiking shoes, there’s lots of rock scrambles.
