Description
Waypoints (0)

This hike entails 2 different vehicles. You start at the southwestern trailhead of the Breakneck Ridge Trail (white) and proceed to rock-scramble for about a mile (with excellent views along the way to give you an excuse for a break!), after which the trail levels out, with more gentle ups and downs for a while. At about the 3.2 mile point, you begin a major descent, after which the Breakneck Ridge Trail turns right to join the Wilkinson Trail (yellow). After about 100 yards, the Breakneck Ridge Trail turns left to begin a steep climb which again entails some rock scrambling, finally arriving at the Beacon fire tower, with its incredible, panoramic view. The Breakneck Ridge Trail then descends to its northeastern terminus at the Casino Trail (red). Turn left onto the latter and follow it downhill (not neglecting to make a stop to investigate the old casino site overlooking the city of Beacon) until its terminus at Mount Beacon Park.

Tough in the humidity. And the final stretch along Rt 9D is not particularly SAFE but a good long day hike with some quality Pizza mixed in.

first hour or so I was straight up climbing mountain. scramble for those that love it. after that a few plateaus and scenic overlooks.. clearly marked trails and varied terrain make this a challenging but rewarding hike.

Super fun for a hike on the east coast. Recommend to go counter clockwise as the climb up the rocks would be way harder going down.

Note that parking near the Breakneck Ridge trailhead on NY9D has been greatly reduced, as the MTA (presumably as a result of being blamed for the fire a couple of weeks ago) has blocked off essentially all parking on the west side of 9D.

There was a fire across Wilkinson memorial trail and breakneck Ridge trail. Trails may not be open in the coming days

I hiked this route on a cold windy day in late February. It was a spectacular experience. I'm an older guy in good shape, without a lot of recent experience hiking. The entire route took 5 1/2 hours. Because it was cold I didn't rest for long. Allow more time on a sunny day to take in the views. On the scramble up the face you often feel very exposed and it would be hard if you have a fear of heights. But it's mostly mental. There's an abundance of hand and footholds for most of it. There was only one short stretch towad the top where the rocks are smooth and have few places to grab. Once at the top of the scramble there's a relaxing stroll through relatively gentle terrain, though just when I started to get tired there's a second scramble up the southern face of South Beacon Mountain. By itself this wouldn't be difficult but it comes toward the end of a long hike. The final descent from the casino site down into town can be tough on your knees but you see the town down below so you know you're near the end. Highly recommended.

Very scenic on the way back! And not nearly as rocky as the way up.

This is probably the best trail for the Hudson Highland Preserve. Starts off with the super fun rock scrambling & a good amount of walking in between (in the woods). I did this trail when it was 97 degrees and it felt like mid 70 to low 80 because of the woods. And you end off at Fire Tower & after that it’s simple descent. Super rewarding and underrated trail as most people do the breakneck trail and will definitely do this trail many times again.

Made it a loop. White trail all the way to Firetower, Red to Beacon and back to the Yellow trail down to the parking lot at Breakneck.
