A popular destination for hikers looking to escape NYC, this short and difficult loop trail heads up Breakneck Ridge and winds down Wilkinson Memorial Trail, passing Sugarloaf Mountain on the descent. The trail includes some steep climbs and rock scrambles over ledges. Breakneck Ridge is a scenic mountain with rocky cliffs along the Hudson River between Beacon and Cold Spring in New York. The parking area is at the Breakneck Ridge Train Station off route 9d and the trailhead can be accessed at the southern end of the lot. This is a great hike for views of the Hudson River and Storm King Mountain across the water.

Harder than expected, especially the steep scramble but downhill as well. We are not big hikers in general and typically stick to scenic walking trails so this was a bit more difficult for our skill level however it’s doable. Kids and dogs were doing it. Would come back for sure!

4/21/18- Fabulous Hike! Climbing Boulders. Beautiful day for a hike, temp was about 60 degrees and Sunny. Great for the Experienced Hiker. Took us just under 2 hours for up and back. Great views!
I HIGHLY Recommend this trail.

Great hike, a lot of rock scrambling! We took the breakneck trail and took a longer loop into the wilkinson trail. 4.5 hours total with 5-7 stops.

The hike is open as of today (4.21.2018) but might be closing for renovation soon.

Great hike to start off spring hiking. Recommend going earlier to avoid a lot of foot traffic, however even at 9am there were still a lot of people. Also, a ton of dogs on the trail. When you get to the first over look there is a lot of glass. Great hike over all!

We were blessed with 80 degrees weather this Saturday and decided to do this strenuous hike in this wonderful weather.
Had heard some news about the trail closing for renovation but it's not and someone was mentioning that it will be closing by the end of this month. Too bad

My first hike!! My buddy picked a doozy! That initial ascent....Wow! I thought “hike” meant “walk”. I got schooled but I’m glad for the experience.

Incredible hike! A little chilly with some brutal wind, but the experience was worthwhile. Be prepared for some serious rock scrambles. My hiking buddy and I were very surprised by the amount of snow still on the top of some of the trails beyond the poplar summit. Made for some challenging conditions on the way to and from the fire tower.

Hard but rewarding. We didn’t even finish this hike just made it shorter by taking shorter way back, because in the beginning of November it was very cold and windy and because of that it was really hard to climb the rocks

Some pretty good climbing

First time there, won’t be my last!! Pretty hard at the onset. You will be using all 4s to get up the initial ascent. As others have said it gets easier but don’t let easiER get confused with easy. It wasn’t that hard for me but I see the entire loop being a challenge for many. It’s well worth the effort though so take your time and be careful. See you on the trails!!

Great scramble to start, then it eases up. I like doing this in the colder months. Less people.

Love this hike❤

Climb is great but the trail is crowded, littered with bottle caps, glass, and has graffiti in a lot of places that kind of ruins it. Ice makes it very challenging.

Scramble is an understatement

Fun scramble. Not so fun in the ice... slipped and slided down the red trail but worth the nice view. FYI the trail is still open as of 1/20/18. Apparently some delays on the planned close.

A great hike, very strenuous and technical, especially because of the snowy/icy conditions of the day, but views are breathtaking and well worth the effort.
Agility and good physical condition are required in the steep portions, but plenty of easy sections to recover in between.

One of the best trail hike and rock climb I completed with my son Chris the end of 2017. The views of the Hudson River were amazing. As soon as we hit the summit it started snowing which only made the views more spectacular. Will definitely plan another hike there early this year.

Hard in a good way. You have to work for it and you get seriously rewarded with fantastic views up and down the mighty Hudson River. Love it.

Great, fun hike that is easily accessible via public transit from NYC. Lots of scrambling but can get crowded during summer weekends. Good views throughout the trail.

This trail has great views and lookout spots! However, it was extremely packed, so get an early start to avoid the crowds.

Just the best. Lots of steep scramble, sometimes bordering on bouldering. Great workout. Great adrenaline rush if you climb up some of the steeper rocks (at your own risk) instead of the trail. Views are gorgeous and plentiful. Stunning, challenging, fun. Wear grippy boots. Watch your foot placement when scrambling. Rocks are really slick, even when dry.
