Great hiking! Although there aren’t any outlooks on Black Dome or Thomas Cole. Best view would be on way up to Black Dome. The view at Camp Steel is obstructed by the tree line.

Amazing trail! Could not do the entire 8 miles. Went to the Black Dome peak and headed back down. the almost 2 mile straight incline is no joke! Views are totally worth it. The top of the mountain looks like an enchanted evergreen forest.

Incredible trail. No more snow, now there are tons of gorgeous wildflowers. Continued to camel back, definitely worth the extra hike.

We bagged Blackhead, Black Dome and Thomas Cole. Wore microspikes on and off. As others mentioned, there's a bit of snowmelt left that's icy. We took the red trail up and down. From the Blackhead overlook, you can visibly see the yellow trail has more ice and incline. There's a rock scramble segment with ice on the ascent of Black Dome that probably still isn't good for kids/novices/spikeless (same should steer clear of the yellow trail for a few more weeks). Other than that, the trail is setup well for some good trail running.

As other hikers have said... the decent is terrifyingly icy even with spikes ( I didnt see that review ahead of going). Highly recommend treating this as an out and back, and not a loop. Nature is beautiful but can be scary as well.

There is one main view here from Black Dome. Spikes essential as of March 22 2020. Going on to Thomas Cole is not worth it unless you are looking for some bonus exercise or ticking peaks. Do not descend via the recommended route. For now, descend the same way you came up instead. The descent from Blackhead is extremely icy and even with good spikes/crampons can earn you a trip to the hospital. With an ice axe and/or rope it would be a fun descent, but otherwise it is bad news. Some other folks ascended this way, but said they would much rather have gone up and down via the recommended ascent.

I went counter clockwise. I’m not sure if this was better or worse. The decent down Black Dome was pretty steep and the rocks were damp so it was slow going. I would skip the last mile in-out to Thomas peak unless you were attempting to hit the summit of all the 3500+ as there was no view. There were some really nice view points and 50% leaf turnover for decent peeping this time of year. The climb up to Black Dome was steep and fun. So was the initial first half of climb to Thomas. The last mile or so at the end of the loop was tiring in my knees. Good hike. Would recommend. 2x? Meh.

Took a lot of breaks at all the views. Some good easy scrambling up Blackhead and the rest of the hike

Athletic dogs only. Steep climbs, occasional ledges.

Seems like an amazing trail- but there are such huge snow drifts (up to 4 feet) that it’s not quite time to enjoy it! Warning to others- do not attempt without snow shoes!

Very icy trail today. Traction 100% required. Never switched out of microspikes the whole day. Brought snowshoes, ice axe and crampons but didn’t use any of it. Added Thomas Cole Mountain to the route and made it an out and back instead of a loop due to conditions.
