Hiking

Thought I was on easier hike towards Snow Hole, but instead was heading towards Berlin Mountain. Trail heads share the same parking lot and there is no sign indicating which way to go. We were not prepared and were misinformed for our real hike, making this one much harder. From the parking lot billboard, there are two ways to start out towards Berlin, to the right (we did not take, but heard it was easier) or to the left. We went up the trail just a few feet to the left of the billboard. Immediately, a sharp incline that steadily elevated about 1,000 feet for nearly a mile. Thereafter, we went down or up multiple series of inclines and declines. Some were steep, others were mild. After more than two miles, we turned back when we realized we were on the wrong path. Lots of branches came off the trail, not sure where they went. They were not marked and our trail was poorly marked. At least it was dry. I did not expect to see much mud, even during a wet season. 80 degree, 50% humidity day, made for lots of bugs. A constant barrage of bugs flying into my ears and eyes, despite having applied a generous amount of repellent.

The directions on this hike are very inaccurate. The address listed for the start of the hike on Sloan Road is for the Farm Field Reservation, and it's a network of flat trails around the farm. We asked a local, and located the parking lot for the Phelps Trail on Oblong Rd, between Sloan Rd and Rt 43. It's 1.5 miles up to the Taconic Crest Trail, then a right 2 miles to Berlin Mt. We only reached the TCT, having wasted lots of time finding the trailhead. Very steep hike, but loved the stone fences along the way.

Really enjoyed this hike. First mile is somewhat of a steep hike.... then mostly levels out. Very well marked, heavily wooded. Nice view at the top. Never saw another person on route. Bring sufficient water and gear. I will definitely return.

VERY HARD HIKE!!!!!!!! Was not expecting it to be as strenuous as it was....there is a grave stone on the very top and remnants of where there was once a fire tower....if you are in good shape bring plenty of water and snacks....it's all uphill from there!
