Counter clockwise to scramble up and staircase down is recommended. It was crowded on Saturday morning around 10am. Brought my dog and she loved it.

Five stars for the trail going counter clockwise. The rock scrambles are so much fun if you choose to go up this way. The other way is just a large spiral staircase of rocks. Yes it’s beautifully done, but that’s not what I want to get out of a hike. I came down the stairs which made my descent super easy and quick. The tower and views at the top are awesome. I loved how it wasn’t crowded, only saw a handful of people hiking the trail and at the top. The park in general is beautiful. Make sure you stop at the bear mountain inn gift shop and look around. Tons of nice little gifts and souvenirs. Total, with time at the top, the hike took me an hour and 50 minutes. Another great trail of you have a couple hours to spare! (If you want more, go across the bridge and hike Anthony’s nose for more great views!). I did both today and are doable!

Just getting back into the hiking groove. Great trail for it. Some tough areas along the way. Nothing anyone can’t endure. Love the trail and will be coming back since I move just 20 minutes away from Bear Mountain.

Loved this trail but it’s definitely not moderate. There are parts that would be really challenging with a dog that isn’t really used to hiking. There was one part where we might have gone a little the wrong way and had to haul ourselves up a rock (and the dog) with a chain.

Great satisfying hike with beautiful autumn views. It’s definitely worth starting the trail early in the morning since it can get crowded during peak times. It’s also important to bring enough water and a snack and proper footwear.

Great views for leaf peeping. Can be very crowded during peak season. Expect a lot of stone stairs.

I would say this hike is more difficult than moderate, especially for the number of hikers who take it on! Highly recommend going counterclockwise, the scramble ascent is a lot more fun than climbing stairs for an hour. The four star review is mostly for the ascent when going counterclockwise, a really great stretch of hiking. Went on a holiday weekend and top was insanely crowded, on the descent down the stairs had to wait in line at time to proceed. Would recommend not on a weekend if possible.
