The directions take you to Whiteface visitor center which is currently closed. However you can still hike this trail by parking at the flume trailhead and hike up through the upper connector trail to bear den. Amazing views from the top and we had the summit to ourselves on a holiday weekend afternoon! The trail becomes about a 5.5 mile hike when you add in the extra mileage from the different start. If you walk down the river path you’ll get to a closed off construction site which is technically closed off to the public, but if it wasn’t, you could walk through it to bear dens official trailhead.

Need to first follow the red trail and then the yellow trail. I wish it was marked more clearly when it was the flume trail v. Bear den trail - I got a bit sidetracked unfortunately. Wore spikes and wish I had snowshoes. Muddy for about the first half mile then warm, slushy snow. When it splits near the top (bear den v whiteface) follow the red squares to the summit. View was totally worth it at the end. Got to see some wildlife as well. My time was quite slow since I got off trail and this was my second hike of the day - could easily take off 30 min to do this hike with plenty of time.

This was a short but steeper than expected trail. It got the heart rate up for sure. The views from the top overlooked the Whiteface ski mountain and were beautiful! Snowshoes would have been the better options over microspikes. The trail got soft near the top. We were able to trail run the way down. Had a total moving time of an hour and 22 minutes, and total overall time of an hour and 42 minutes.

Great hike as part of the lake placid nine. Overall we did it in an hour and 45 minutes RT You go in about .3 miles and then it’s a steady incline which increases towards the top. No real breaks once you get started going up. Views are great! Could be marked out a little bit better so keep track of your AllTrails app and map to help. It was easy for us as there’s snow on the ground and can follow other peoples trekked path.

Great hike. Some snow toward the top but made it even more beautiful. Great views from the top, especially of Whiteface which we did as a high peak.

follow red to yellow markers, avoid unmarked bike path at sign directing to flume or bear den parking lots. just keep walking do not go left up hill path. few tricky spots to locate markers, wet from 2 days of rain so use caution. great views for effort. snow on whiteface and higher elevation peaks, none on bear trail or summit

poorly marked trail. switches from red to yellow trail markers at the split for flume falls. pretty muddy and all the fallen leaves made it quick slick. pretty steep the whole way up. view of whiteface was beautiful though.

Beautiful views at the summit, but the trail leading there is absolutely terribly marked. Beside a few markers close in proximity, you had to search for most of them.

Great view at the top and steady but not difficult climb. The five kids aged 4,7,8,8,9 all made it without too much complaining :)

Nice upward grinding trail. The usual rocky/rooty challenge. Well marked. Wonderful fall views of Whiteface ski lodge. False peaks with piles of rocks in a couple of spots - then the trail says it goes on longer but couldn’t locate it. Felt I was tramping a bit on the brush so we gave up. All in all - very nice hike - especially for somewhat tired legs from the long up and down done the day before.

Great hike for beginners, pretty steady incline to the top but absolutely worth it. Took us less than 3 hours total round trip.
