If you enjoy a mix of a standard trail and a section of steep rock scrambles that require use of your hands this is an excellent trail. The steep scramble begins where the trail turns north after the extended eastern walk. Incredible view at the top. Trail is not marked overly well, especially the very last section at the top once you head west, but with the use of GPS and trail map I was able to find the way without issue. I’m 44 and was able to complete the hike with my 7 year old son, but won’t recommend taking kids that are not familiar with steep scrambles. My son loved it, and was able to complete the hike without issue. While my wife enjoys hiking, I think she would have turned around when the steep scramble began.

This was a great early morning hike! Nice trail, fairly well marked. A few spots where we had to scramble up and over some rocks but manageable. The view at the top was amazing!!

Felt like I went uphill in both directions. A couple very muddy scrambles and a few very icy ones as well. Not a hike for the light of heart. Couldn’t find a view on the summit of Pitchoff so I turned around. Snow in spots was soft and lots of post holes from others.

Awesome quick hike and amazing conditions - all powder

actually around 3.4 miles round trip. took us almost 2 hours total. once you get to the first viewpoint halfway in it’s pretty much rock climbing from there but AWESOME view at the top. definitely a confusing climb so ask other hikers for some tips if you see them. wouldn’t recommend for anyone who isn’t very able-bodied

The view was amazing to the balanced rocks. Did try to go to the summit however not well marked and viewless peak. The trail up to the balanced rocks was washed out in one section and there was a large section that was just scrambling over rocks with only roots to hold on to.

Completed 6/9/19 3 hours 81°F Arrived at 850am and 3 parking lots are already full. Pro: 1. great view 2. not your average hike 3. views of cascade and placid 4. lots of room at the top Con: 1. It was hard to find the trail head 2. Rock climbing is needed 3. you are walking in a small stream/Water coming down on the rocks you are climbing 4. Not marked well 5. over grown in parts

Great hike. Terrain was a little treacherous as it was not a simple walking trail. Parts of the trail did involve rock climbing. But has a beautiful view from the top and many spots along the way as well. Plus the balanced rocks at the top are very unique

climbed on August 29th. The trail could be marked better, but overall...not terribly difficult to follow to the Balanced Rocks. There are some very steep sections which required climbing over rocks, proceed carefully. The trail levels out eventually and there is a tree with a trail marker that, if one looks closely, shows the direction ( to the right ) to the rocks. Proceed for a few minutes over the flat, bald, rocks and you will come to the awesome site of the rocks and the mountain scenery beyond. Well worth the effort and sweat! The trek back down is manageable, just take your time. I found this to be a fun and challenging hike with a very rewarding view at the rocks!

Poorly marked leaving one to guess at the main trail through a dozen points of choices. Rough shape, several steep sections are ruts in the dirt at root-grabbing steepness. Worn two feet deep. Treacherous going down and that’s with the few roots and saplings surviving as hand holds. Overall a neglected poor cousin to Cascade across the highway. Didn’t mind the condition just wish the trail description was accurate. Not likely we would have opted for a dirt crawl. And several more trail markers are needed.

hard but really worth it

Good but not an easy trail. I would rate as moderate. Loose dirt on some steep inclines near the top. Difficult for our two medium sized dogs to navigate in spots (they needed a boost) with 3-4 foot steep rock faces.

This is definitely not an easy hike! It starts out relatively flat but there are rocky spots and steep climbs. It is not clearly marked at the "top". If you make a right it takes you to the balanced rocks and a spectacular view which is definitely worth the trek. The left where the arrow is pointing takes you up further to the summit. One of the great things about this trail is that it's much less crowded than Cascade across the street. This is a great hike but be prepared for a little bit of rock scrambling.
